Shaping Our Students for the Future, One Initiative at a Time

 

The Private Education Institutions’ (PEI) Graduate Employment Surveys conducted by the Committee for Private Education (CPE) provides a starting point for prospective students to make informed choices when deciding upon a PEI to pursue higher education with. It has also provided increased transparency for the decision-making process.

 

However, the Graduate Employment Surveys have their limitations as they are more of an indicative nature. Also, employability statistics for different public universities and PEIs differ in methodologies and response rates. As such, they do not provide a full representation of the whole education landscape, nor do they point to different outcomes to be expected across different PEIs and different industries.

 

Additionally, salary is but one facet of a graduate's employability; graduates need to consider the career opportunities in different industries and progression/advancement of different jobs.

 

Prospective students must therefore be aware of the parameters these findings are couched within.

 

A focus on graduate employability

MDIS conducts its own graduate surveys for each graduating cohort, and has done so since 2010. The latest 2017 MDIS graduate survey indicates that 73.5% of our graduates find jobs within six months of graduation. The survey covers full-time and part-time students in permanent and temporary employment, and not just fresh graduates in full-time permanent jobs as in the GES, which is meant to reflect employment outcomes for new entrants into the labour force only.

               

In today’s globally connected world, graduates should look at the wider global marketplace for job opportunities. Opportunities also abound in start-ups and SMEs where graduates can prove their worth. In this, PEI graduates, with their globally recognised qualifications and international perspective, can make their mark in the industry.

 

MDIS’ Career Assistance Unit (CAU) proactively helps students increase their chances of getting a job even before graduation. Presently, CAU has more than 800 companies and over 2,500 students and alumni on its CareerHub portal. Our annual career fairs are participated widely by both employers and students and alumni. The recent MDIS Virtual Career Fair, held in Sept 2017, saw close to 500 job applications submitted to 15 participating companies, including Easmed Pte Ltd, Pixel Tech, Johnson & Johnson, Metropolitan YMCA Singapore, and RE&S Enterprises.  

 

A recent Indonesian graduate from our MBA in Banking and Finance, awarded by Bangor University in UK shared, “Even before completing my studies, I had already received an offer as a Business Development executive at Hashmicro Pte Ltd, which I applied through MDIS’ career hub portal. I have MDIS to thank for providing this platform to enable us (students) to find job opportunities.”
 

The institute has also successfully linked students and graduates with companies in the tourism and hospitality, biotechnology/life sciences, and media and communications, among many other industries.  


Ensuring positive learning outcomes

A champion of lifelong learning, MDIS focuses its efforts on enabling both students and working professionals to achieve strong graduate employability and develop skillsets that result in robust business outcomes.

 

The institute has always emphasised student learning outcomes, including developing and nurturing students' skills; both industry and soft skills, to produce graduates who are industry-ready. Local universities tend to focus more on research while PEIs focus more on skills-based education, in particularly providing internship opportunities for students.  

 

Singapore might be a small nation, but our economy needs a diversified pool of talent; this is where PEIs like MDIS play a role in helping individuals contribute meaningfully to the economy. 

 

Year-on-year, we continue to introduce skills-based vocational programmes and short workshops/courses to add value to our students’ educational experience. Since August 2017, we have introduced over 30 new pre-degree to degree programmes, including a Bachelor of Science Nursing (Top-up) for post-registered nurses under our new School of Nursing, as well as a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Cybersecurity and Networks to address the talent requirements for this expanding sector.   

 

We have and will continue to launch short technical courses in disciplines such as cookery, communications, engineering, fashion and more. It is also in our plans to introduce more SkillsFuture Credit eligible courses – up to 20% of new courses, over these next two years. 

 

The institute also continues to strengthen its university partnerships, bringing on board highly qualified and competent universities with their industry relevant and current curricula, which helps nurture and equip students with work-ready skills and competencies. 

                                                      

These initiatives and more will prepare our students for future challenges including technological disruptions, and a rapidly changing global economy and its resultant challenges.

 

Employers do look beyond qualifications and will choose the right candidate whether from Autonomous Universities or PEIs.
