Career Opportunities

The main destinations for graduates are expected to be fashion-related creative industries. These include design, brand development, fashion publishing, production, design consultancies, PR and fashion retail.  Some graduates may become freelance consultants or self-employed designers, or go on to further study or teacher training.

 

Objectives  

BA (Hons) Fashion Product and Promotion is broken down into the following subject areas and covers each area in depth:

Fashion:

  • Concepts, theories and hands-on projects, event management,
    portfolio development, illustration, photography & styling.

Product:

  • Understanding the fashion design process from concept to creation,
    garment construction and accessories design.

Promotion:

  • Branding, marketing, retail concepts and consumer research.

 

The programme aims to:

- Provide opportunities for students to gain a systematic and coherent understanding of the various theoretical, historical, cultural and contextual dimensions impacting on design practice.

- Encourage students to combine highly specialised technical and conceptual skills to enhance their creativity.

- Promote self-reflective and meaningful approaches to learning with the specialised research skills to observe, investigate and critically evaluate information from a wide range of sources.

- Produce graduates with the appropriate range of subject-specific and professional skills necessary to pursue their chosen careers.

- Develop in students, a high level of communication skills in the presentation of creative professional work.

 

Assessment Methods

Teaching is almost entirely practical and studio based, supported by lectures, seminars, tutorials, e-learning and independent learning.

Assessment is almost totally through coursework.

 

Graduation

Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Fashion Product and Promotion (Top-up) from the University of Sunderland, UK. The degree will be the same as that awarded to the full-time students at the University main campus in the UK.

MDIS School of Fashion

The School of Fashion and Design was established to nurture a new generation of creative professionals in the fields of Fashion Design, Marketing & Branding, through teaching excellence. Students in the School of Fashion and Design will undergo a 100% coursework curriculum based on project and studio practice to be familiarised with real-world assignments.

They will have opportunities to collaborate with local and global brands and participate in fashion shows such as Singapore Fashion Week, Jakarta Fashion Week and Mercedes Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week in Malaysia.

Students’ learning experiences are also enhanced through an optimum student-lecturer ratio, classes with an international teaching faculty, in addition to modern facilities housed within an in-campus Fashion Studio.  Upon successful completion of the programmes, the graduates can find career opportunities: ranging from designing, manufacturing, retailing, marketing, to branding and media.

YEAR 2 ENTRY:

Design Theory 2

This module builds on the design philosophies, approaches and influential practitioners introduced at level one. The module will look at some of the important debates and issues in design, drawing from areas such as politics, the environment, globalisation, society and culture, etc. Key practitioners influencing some of these debates will be discussed and there will be some analysis of how issues have affected design thinking, and how design in turn has the power to change our world. In the second half of the module, students will be introduced to ways of approaching a major written work such as a dissertation. Through lectures, workshops, a practical assessed assignment and tutorials, they will develop the subject ideas, the content, structure, methodology, referencing and small bibliography which could form part of the introduction and first chapter of a design dissertation. This is in preparation for the writing of a full dissertation at level three.

Advanced Fashion Product

This module has been designed to allow students to experience the technical requirements of Fashion Products at an advanced
level. Utilising research, design and technical skills, through a structured series of live projects, workshops and diverse fashion product experiences. This module will instruct the student in the operational skills required for the safe practice and use of the different types of industrial practise and machinery involved in product and manufacturing. The student will experience methods of garment design, accessory design processes to inform personal responses to design briefs. Students will experience and be shown design techniques to realise and develop independent ideas in
flatwork form through visual communication, illustration and digital skills and presentation skills to produce a personal fashion design portfolio. Health and Safety regulations and procedure with regards to aspects of this module will be taught and demonstrated.

Advanced Fashion Promotion

This module has been designed to allow students to experience the conceptual requirements of Fashion Promotion at an advanced
level. Utilising consumer research, design demographics and market research skills, through a structured series of live projects, workshops and diverse fashion promotion experiences. Students will develop their understanding of how these processes can be used in industrial periodical application; trend and research techniques as well as digital Image and presentation skills using CAD manipulation, art direction, events organization and management. This module will instruct the student in the organizational skills required for the creation of different types of Fashion promotion scenarios. The student will experience diverse methods of promotion, photography, styling, and presentation. Students will experience and be shown design techniques to realise and develop independent concepts, through visual promotion and communication, to produce a personal fashion branding portfolio. Health and Safety regulations and procedure with regards to aspects of this module will be taught and demonstrated.

YEAR 3 ENTRY:

Design Research Project

This module will allow students to carry out in depth investigation into a particular issue or topic that must be relevant to them as a
designer. Using their knowledge of various design and theoretical disciplines gained in THD104 and THD203, or from studying at other colleges. Students will demonstrate their research, creative, technical and organisational skills, to produce a dissertation backed up with a hypothesis relevant to their own chosen topic.

Professional Portfolio

This module has been designed to allow the student to produce a final fashion portfolio for the Fashion industry. This will demonstrate
key personal design skills that are unique to the student and relevant to their chosen pathway in the Fashion industry. This will be structured by a series of briefs and national competitions or live projects allowing the student to demonstrate a personal style in product, promotion and branding. The student will be guided through personal tutorials how to achieve a professional portfolio that is tailored to them. The student will incorporate previous taught design processes to inform personal responses to design briefs, and to be able to present them in an individual and personal way within the context of a final individual portfolio. Students will implement all visual communication, illustration and digital skills and presentation skills that they have learned to produce a fashion design portfolio. Health and Safety regulations and procedure with regards to aspects of this module will be taught and demonstrated.

Design – Major Final Portfolio

This triple module gives degree students the opportunity to demonstrate the breadth and depth of their creative, technical and organisational skills. Students work on a self-initiated project in far greater depth than would be possible in a single module. The outcome of this module may be two or three dimensional. For example, it could be any combination of the following:

• Publications (magazines, books, calendars, etc)
• Series of illustrations whether standalone or shown in context,
digital or traditional
• Complete graphic design solution(s), packaging, information
graphics, corporate ID, motion graphics, point of sale, paper
mechanics, posters, etc
• Jewellery collection, detailed working model(s), etc
• Multimedia product(s): virtual world, website(s), games, etc
• Series of advertising campaigns with strategies, planning, etc
• Full animation(s) whether 2D traditional, 3D digital,
experimental, stopmotion, etc
• Interior design solution(s), fly-throughs, lighting schemes,
furnishing, etc
• Fashion products, design of promotional events, fashion
illustration, photography, etc

Or any other specialist outcomes from the design degrees.
