Dr Eric Kuan Choon Hock

Dr Eric Kuan is the President of MDIS. He joined MDIS in 1979 and has served in various positions in the MDIS Governing Council. He was elected as President in 1992, and also serves as the Chairman of the MDIS Education and Training Sub-Committee.

As an advocate of lifelong learning, Dr Kuan has acquired several postgraduate qualifications, over the years. He holds several Master degrees from UK Universities, namely a Master of Arts in Business Analysis from the University of Lancaster, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of York, a Master of Arts in Education (Merit) from the University of Nottingham, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Edinburgh, a Master of Science in Global Public Health (Merit) from Queen Mary University of London, and a MSc in Sustainability Business Leadership (Merit) from the University of Leeds, and a Master of Science in Primary Care from the University of Glasgow, making it his 7th Master's degree from the UK Russell Group of Universities. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing FCIM (UK) and a Distinguished Fellow of MDIS.

Dr Kuan has passed the professional examinations of the American Production & Inventory Control Society (APICS) and attained the award of the prestigious Certified Production & Inventory Management (CPIM).

His professional career experience includes holding senior management positions in manufacturing, materials & logistics management, as well as sales & marketing functions in British, American and Singapore-based multinational companies.

He is an education and training consultant and has been conducting lectures in the subject of strategic management since 1986. His areas of expertise include Strategic Management, Operations & Production Management, Logistic Management, and Marketing and Sustainability Management.

As an education and training consultant, he is actively involved in marketing education programmes internationally. He has conducted numerous workshops and previews in China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Maldives.

For his outstanding contributions to the field of management education in Singapore and the region, and in particular for his significant contributions to MDIS, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of ‘Doctor of Commercial Science’ by the Oklahoma City University in 1999, the Honorary ‘Doctor of the University’ by University of Bradford in 2005 and the Honorary ‘Doctor of Business Administration’ by the University of Sunderland in 2015.

Dr Kuan was also awarded the prestigious ‘Teaching Fellow’ by Bangor University in 2018.
 

    

Mr Roger Tham Kong Khuan
Vice-President
Management Development Institute of Singapore

Mr Roger Tham Kong Khuan  has served the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) voluntarily for more than 20 years since 1998. He is currently the Vice-President, and first joined MDIS as a Council Member of the MDIS Governing Council and has held various portfolios in the Council, including Honorary Treasurer and Assistant Honorary Treasurer. 

He also serves as the Chairman of the Student Services Subcommittee as well as the Corporate Relations Subcommittee. In his respective portfolios with MDIS, he has provided valuable counsel, guidance and mentorship to the team. 

He was conferred the MDIS Honorary Fellow award in 2013, for his invaluable contributions and support towards the interest and welfare of MDIS, and the advancement of the institute as a provider of quality education.

He graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the University of East London.

His career in the airline industry spans over a period of 47 years in various positions and working with subsidiary companies of the industry. He commenced his career with Singapore Airlines in 1973, and was transferred to Singapore Airlines Engineering Company Pte Ltd (SIAEC) in 1992 and seconded to Singapore Jamco Pte Ltd in 1998 and subsequently deseconded to SIAEC in 2000. He has retired from the airline industry in August 2020 and currently allocates his time towards the progress of MDIS. 

He has also been actively involved in Community services during the period 1996 to 2000 as a Member, Telok Kurau Feedback Group; Telok Kurau Zone A - Sub Committee, Secretary to the Chairman and a Citizen’s Consultative Committee member of the Joo Chiat Community Service. 

Mr Roger Tham is a valued member of the MDIS Governing Council and we look forward to his continued support and guidance. 

Mr Shareef Bin Abdul Jaffar
Secretary-General
Management Development Institute of Singapore

Mr Shareef Bin Abdul Jaffar is an international management and training consultant with more than 35 years of experience in the industry. He has worked in senior general management positions for a number of local and international companies in the hospitality and human resource development sector. He runs an international training and development consultancy company specialising in training design and has worked as a contracted consultant for a number of MNCs, NGOs and Government Agencies.

Mr Shareef is a multi-disciplined professional holding a Master of Science Degree in Strategic Planning from the Edinburgh Business School, a Master of Arts in Education (Merit) from Nottingham University, and a Master’s Degree in Law (Commendation) in Corporate Governance from the University of Law, UK.

He holds post-graduate qualifications in Business Administration, Chartered Qualification in Marketing, and Professional Qualifications in Business Administration, Administrative Management, International Advertising & Communications, and Training & Development. He is a Certified Assessor in Quality Management Systems.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK (FCIM), a Grad Member of the Chartered Governance Institute of UK & Ireland (GradCGI), a Fellow of the Institute of Administrative Management, UK (FInstAM), as well as a Fellow of the Management Development Institute of Singapore (FMDIS). Mr Shareef is an Accredited Senior Director and a Member of the Singapore Institute of Directors.

Mr Shareef leads an active public and community life. He did his national service in the Singapore Police Force, and held the rank of Superintendent of Police. He held the key appointment as NS Commander, Central Police Division and was awarded Commissioner of Police Commendations and Police National Service Commendations on several occasions for his leadership and commitment. He has led his Division to top honours in the Best Police National Service Land Division Awards, clinching the top spot many times and sustaining the Division’s performance within the top ranks throughout the duration of his command. In 2008, he was awarded the Pingat Bakti Setia (Polis) for 25 years of meritorious service by the President of Singapore.

Mr Shareef serves on the Board of Directors of a number of higher educational and training organisations. He is a member of the Governing Council of the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) where he serves as its Secretary-General. He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of MDIS (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and as Chairman of the Board of Directors for MDIS International College (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. He serves as a Director and Member of the Board of Directors of MDIS Tashkent, Uzbekistan and MDIS Dushanbe, Tajikistan. In addition, he is also a Director of MDIS Holdings, MDIS Residences & MDIS International, and is a Trustee for the MDIS Trust Fund.

Mr Shareef has contributed significantly to the global expansion and growth of MDIS. He played a significant role in the establishment of its first overseas campus in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Today, the Institute is regarded as a first-choice institution of higher learning in Uzbekistan. He has contributed extensively to the growth of MDIS’ second campus in Iskandar, Johor, Malaysia, and the establishment of MDIS’ third international campus in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Mr Shareef was actively involved in the acquisition of the Service Quality Centre. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Singapore Quality Centre (SQC), and as Vice-President of the Service Quality Centre, Indonesia.

Mr Shareef is involved in a voluntary capacity in a number of social enterprises. He is the 2nd Deputy Chairman of the National Cooperative Federation, Singapore.

He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Singapore’s largest Credit Cooperative, TCC Credit Cooperative Society Ltd, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for another social enterprise, Secure Guards Cooperative Ltd, and Chairman of Security Masters Ltd.

Being an ardent sportsman, he also served as the Hon. Secretary of a professional football club in the Singapore League.
