Choosing between a career and higher qualifications can be tough for many polytechnic graduates.

Last October, Ms Shao enrolled in the part-time Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business and Marketing (Top-up), awarded by the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom.

The top-up degree programme is intended for polytechnic graduates holding relevant diplomas. They would be able to enter the programme's final year and complete their degree in 12 months (part-time). Full-time students can complete the degree in nine months.

This degree programme equips students with a better understanding of organisations, the external environment in which they operate and how they are managed. It also helps develop and maintain their awareness and understanding of business in a regional, national and international context.

I found the programme schedule and duration favourable. It provided great flexibility and allowed me to juggle work, family and studies. I was pleasantly surprised that this programme had allowed me to make a smooth transition back to studying even after a ten-year hiatus.

My fellow coursemates come from diverse backgrounds. This provides valuable opportunities for me to interact with people from all walks of life and broaden my networks.

Apart from gaining an amazing learning experience, this degree has given me an edge in my career. I strongly believe that anyone with sheer determination can do the same.

I chose the University of Sunderland because it has won several awards and has been nominated as one of six universities for "university of the year".  I am also really excited to achieve my bachelor degree within 1 year.

I am from Indonesia, and despite the many nationalities in my class, my classmates and I were able to bond due to our deep passion for business and respect for other cultures.

My favourite module was Consumer Psychology.  This module enables me to learn how different people react in certain circumstances and understand consumers' different mindsets or perspectives towards different products."

"The insight and lessons learnt in this degree are useful for when I set up my own business."

"The lecturers had a wealth of industrial experience and could provide current yet relevant insight and strategies on workplace problems and issues that we were facing."

“My favorite modules were market strategy and strategic management.  The marketing strategy module was relevant to my current job while the strategic management module gave me insight that would help me climb the corporate ladder.”

"The history and establishment (MDIS) were important criteria in my selection."

"It was the only top-up course that I found which covered marketing and business.  The modules were relevant to my career and the course work was definitely manageable.  It gives working professionals like me a lot of flexibility.  The course is very application based and I was also challenged to think creatively - a useful skill for projects and challenges I handle at work."

"The lecturers had a wealth of experience.  They share case studies and personal career stories, as well as advice on how to succeed in the working world."
