Programme Objectives

The programme is intended to:

  • Provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the basic science that underpins biotechnology, including molecular biology and bioinformatics.
  • Advance students’ knowledge of the science that is at the forefront of developments in biotechnology.
  • Develop students’ practical skills including information technology skills, that will enable them to pursue careers in the biotechnology industry.
  • Prepare students for employment, by developing transferable skills, including: self-management and reflective practice, independence, communication, IT, numeracy, data analysis, interpersonal and teamwork skills, alongside an awareness of current issues within the taught programme.
  • Develop an appreciation of the role of scientific research in the advancement of Biotechnology and to encourage an understanding of the potential economic, ethical, and political impacts of modern biotechnology on society.

Methods of Assessment

The modules will be assessed either by coursework, examinations or a combination of both appropriate to the module objectives.

International Foundation Diploma in Biomedical Sciences 

OR

At least 3 GCE A level subjects with Grade B (including Grade B in Biology)

Life-Science related diplomas from local polytechnics (GPA 2.0 to 2.49) 

OR

Other PEI's foundation qualifications related to science with an entry requirement of 10 years of formal foreign education

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) Biotechnology qualify for several rewarding career options. These include working as medical technologists, research assistants, forensics investigators, medical diagnostic laboratory technicians, production biotechnologists in biopharmaceutical companies producing drugs, biologics and vaccines, and microbiologists in diagnostics laboratories. Graduates can also explore employment options in the food science sector, taking on positions like food science technologists and high technology agriculture technicians.

Graduates from the BSc (Hons) Biotechnology Sciences can apply for postgraduate medical schools, upon taking the MCAT/GAMSAT.

The projects are wide-ranging and include microbe discovery, toxicology testing, traditional Chinese Medicine evaluations and bioinformatics topics.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biotechnology is a 3-year direct honours course, with each year divided into two terms of 14 weeks each.

Applicants will need to fulfil the following admissions requirements:
• GCE 'A' Level applicants: Obtain 3 'B' subject grades, of which one must be Biology.
• Polytechnic applicants: Hold Life Sciences-related diplomas from local polytechnics, with a GPA of 2.0 to 2.49.
• Holders of the MDIS International Foundation Diploma in Biomedical Sciences: Passing at the first sitting.
