Programme Objectives

In addition to developing subject-based expertise and skills, consideration of practices adopted in this field globally will ensure the programme is relevant to an international community of students. 

The programme is intended to:

  • Provide students with a sound knowledge and understanding in the fundamental subjects that underpin Biomedical Science, including: human physiology and anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular genetics, immunology, microbiology and the biology of disease. 
  • To develop intellectual skills in relation to knowledge and understanding of current methods available for laboratory investigation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. In addition to the roles of specialist disciplines, including: medical microbiology, clinical biochemistry, cellular pathology, haematology and transfusion science and clinical immunology.
  • To develop practical skills in the laboratory in addition to broader professional skills.
  • To prepare students for employment or future study by developing transferable skills, including: self-management and reflective practice, communication, IT, numeracy, data analysis and interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • To develop an appreciation of the role of scientific research in the advancement of Biomedical Science.

Progression to Medical Education

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biomedical Science programme may apply to Australian and UK medical schools upon successful completion of MCAT/GAMSAT test.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 17 and above, and meet at least ONE of the following requirements:

For Year 1 entry

International Foundation Diploma in Biomedical Sciences

OR

GCE ‘A’ Level, in science stream subjects (Grades BBB, with B in Biology)

OR

Life-Science related diplomas from local polytechnics (GPA 2.0 to 2.49)

OR

Other PEI's foundation qualifications related to science with an entry requirement of 10 years of formal education

For Year 2 entry

Life-Sciences related diplomas from local polytechnics (GPA 2.5 & above)

 

English Language Requirements

The applicant is required to achieve one of the following:

IELTS 6.0 (with no element below 5.5)

MDIS Professional Certificate in English (PCIE)

Graduates from the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biomedical Science can pursue a career as medical technologists, research assistants, forensics investigators and medical diagnostic laboratory technicians.

The projects are wide-ranging and can include microbe discovery, toxicology testing, traditional Chinese Medicine evaluations and bioinformatics topics.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biomedical Science is a 3-year direct honours course, with each year divided into two terms of 14 weeks each.

Applicants will need to fulfil the following admissions requirements:
• GCE 'A' Level applicants: Obtain 3 'B' subject grades, of which one must be Biology.
• Polytechnic applicants: Hold Life Sciences-related diplomas from local polytechnics, with a GPA of 2.0 to 2.49.
• Holders of the MDIS International Foundation Diploma in Biomedical Sciences: Passing at the first sitting.
