Programme Aims & Objectives
The Higher Diploma in Information Technology course aims to equip students in all aspects of IT, but particularly focuses on computing and network systems, database systems, web technologies and project management.
Students can choose prescribed elective modules that will provide them with specialised skills to implement IT services and solutions for the business, digital media and computer technology industries. In addition, the course aims to develop students’ analytical and personal skills necessary to work in a specialised computing and management environment.
Methods of Assessment
Each module will be assessed through a combination of class presentations, discussions, assignments, project work and/or written examinations.
Programme Structure
Students must complete six core and two elective modules from one of the three options:
- Business IT
- Digital Media
- Computer Technology
Why MDIS
The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), founded in 1956, is Singapore's oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning. MDIS has two subsidiaries: Management Development Institute of Singapore Pte Ltd (MDIS Pte Ltd) to oversee its Singapore academic operations, and MDIS International Pte Ltd to further its globalisation strategy.
Progression
Upon successful completion of the programme, students gain year 2 entry into the following programmes:
• Bachelor of Science (Hons) Cybersecurity and Networks (awarded by Teesside University, UK)
• Bachelor of Science (Hons) Information Technology (awarded by Teesside University, UK)
• Bachelor of Science (Hons) Business Information Systems (Top up) (awarded by the University of Portsmouth, UK)
Infocomm Technology (ICT)
The Infocomm Technology (ICT) industry is reshaping the economy, empowering every sector and contributing to Singapore’s economic and social growth.
ICT has also greatly enhanced Singapore’s competitiveness by raising productivity and transforming business processes in the education, healthcare, manufacturing, tourism and hospitality and finance sectors.
Singapore is poised to be an information and technology hub which continues to attract multinational infocomm giants like Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon Web Services, Google, IBM, in addition to international start-ups and exciting user organisations.
Growing Demand For Infocomm Professionals
The number of employed infocomm manpower grew by 15.1% to reach 172,800 in 2015. Together with 20,100 infocomm job vacancies, total demand of infocomm manpower increased by 17.1% to reach 192,900 in 2015.
Infocomm professionals are expected to grow by about 53,200 from 2016 to 2018.
Technical IT specialists accounted for more than 7 in 10 jobs in 2015 IT Development roles accounted for 48% of the total demand for infocomm professionals, with software development job roles being the most in demand.
The next most demanded group of professionals were those working in Network & Systems related job roles. They accounted for 16% of the total demand for infocomm professionals.
Other tech specialists such as IT Security Specialists, Data Scientists and Infocomm R&D accounted for 6% (9,300) for infocomm professionals. Total demand of infocomm manpower increased by 4,200 or 2.7% to reach 161,200 in 2013.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must be of age 16 and above, and possess ONE of the following admission requirements:
- Obtained at least a Grade 'E' at GCE 'A' Levels in any 2 subjects OR
- International Foundation Diploma in Information Technology awarded by MDIS OR
- International Foundation Diploma in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Art - Technology from MDIS OR
- Diploma from recognised local polytechnics / pathway programmes from other PEIs OR
- International applicants must have completed 12 years of formal Education OR
- Mature candidates (≥30 years old with 8 years relevant work experience)
Mathematics Requirements
The applicant is required to achieve one of the following:
- At least a Grade 'C6' at GCE 'O' level in Mathematics OR
- To pass the MDIS Mathematics Entrance Test
If an applicant fails the MDIS Mathematics Entrance Test, he or she is required to study, complete and pass the Online Mathematics Preparation Course. The applicant will then proceed to take the MDIS Mathematics Entrance Test the 2nd time.
Local applicants who do not meet all the minimum entry requirements will be classified as non-standard entry must study online to complete and pass the Online Mathematics / English Preparation Course, passed the MDIS Mathematics / English Entrance Test and an interview. Students are given 3 attempts for MDIS Mathematics / English Entrance Test and Online Mathematics / English Preparation Course.
English Language Requirements
Applicants are required to possess at least ONE of the following:
- C6 pass in English at GCE ‘O’ level or equivalent OR
- Achieve a minimum band of 5.5 in IELTS or equivalent OR
- To pass the MDIS English Entrance Test OR
- MDIS Professional Certificate in English OR
- Online English Placement Test conducted by MDIS OR
- Letter from College/University clearly stating the Medium of Instruction of the highest qualification to be English
- Achieve a minimum score of 85 and above in Duolingo English Test
