Programme Objectives
The Master of Science Healthcare Management programme is designed to offer the opportunity for experienced practitioners and others interested in healthcare management to focus on practices, policies and drivers and their impact on the management of the healthcare sector.
The programme will support students in developing their personal and professional competencies as an existing or aspiring manager. They will develop the capacity to initiate and sustain change and formulate balanced judgements both in their own practice and more generally within the healthcare context. They will also develop a systematic and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of healthcare management and be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of key issues. In addition, they will develop critical analysis and evaluation skills that will help them create new and innovative approaches to practice by critically reflecting on contemporary healthcare management issues.
The programme enables students to consider the implications of their learning, enquiry for policy and practice and evaluation of complex issues by providing contemporary knowledge of theory, research and professional practice related to strategic healthcare management, social marketing, leadership and collaborative working. They will be encouraged to think independently, understand and justify their own opinions, and recognise the need to challenge their thinking, and the thinking of others throughout the programme. They will also be encouraged to conceptualise, theorise and develop research, which addresses complex issues by the completion of a dissertation.
Through independent learning, they will develop the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment such as initiative, personal responsibility, problem solving, team working and planning.
Learning Outcomes
The main aims of the programme are to enable students to:
- Conceptualise, theorise and undertake research which addresses complex issues and which advances understanding within the discipline or practice;
- Contribute to the creation of new knowledge and /or applications to practice within their discipline through a critical understanding of the processes through which knowledge is created;
- Formulate balanced judgements when considering incomplete or ambiguous data and can communicate these judgements clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
