3 Reasons why you should consider a career in a Startup

Have you ever wondered on the difference between working in a big corporation versus working in a Startup?

Many people would advise you to choose a career path in a well-established corporation. Most reasons cited will circle around “reliability”, “Stability”, “Higher pay”, “Value-add your resume” etc.
While some of these reasons may be true, there are perks of working in a Startup that a career in a big corporation will not be able to provide. Here are 3 reasons why you should consider a career in a Startup company.

1. Room to grow and get noticed

In bigger organisations, it usually takes a longer time for your promotion to come compared to a Startup due to internal competition and strict career progression pathways. It might even take a while for the bosses to remember your name!

Comparatively, in Startups, the team is usually small and the work environment is flexible. Your opinions and achievements will be easily spotted and thus, propel your growth upwards.

2. Experience through many “hats”

In a Startup, most employees wear more than 1 hat at work. You will be exposed to a variety of learning opportunities, compared to working in a big firm where employees have a very specific job scope. You will likely be exposed to different aspects of the business which allows you to pick up different skills and experience.

3. Culture

Company culture often plays a major role in determining how happy an employee is in a job. Working in a Startup usually means that you are one of the influencers to shape the culture. Larger organisations will already have a strong company culture that has been around for a long time, making it hard for you to change it.

Startups with a smaller team allow for you and your colleagues to have an immediate impact on the environment and your feedbacks can help change or improve the culture.

All said, there are definitely pros and cons to working in either a Startup or a large organisation. To answer the question of which to choose, it really depends on you and your preferences. So do reflect on your own working styles and choose an environment where you will feel comfortable in, instead of choosing based on a list of tangible benefits.
