Objectives

  • To equip participants with the basic foundations to obtain a formal qualification in the field of psychology
  • To enhance the effectiveness of participants' practical skills and techniques through action-based training

Assessment Methods

Each module is assessed by assignment (20%), class participation (10%) and an examination (70%).

Graduation and Degree/Certificate/Diploma

Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded with the Professional Certificate in Psychology, by Management Development Institute of Singapore.

Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS)

The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), founded in 1956, is Singapore's oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning. MDIS has two subsidiaries: Management Development Institute of Singapore Pte Ltd (MDIS Pte Ltd) to oversee its Singapore academic operations, and MDIS International Pte Ltd to further its globalisation strategy.

 

Basic Counselling Skills (Rogerian)

In this module, students will experience the basics about counselling principles as introduced by Carl Rogers, from initiation to summation of sessions.

Communication in Psychology

In this module, students will learn the foundation level of communication designed for general education and introduced to fundamental concepts in psychology and behavioural science, as related to the practice of communication.

History of Psychology, its Evolution and its Theorists

This is a foundation module designed to give general education and introduce fundamental knowledge in psychology and behavioural science as related to the history of psychology. We will explore history of psychology, its evolution and the significant theorists who have made an impact on psychology.

Basic Social Science

This course will provide a broad overview of the self awareness, sociology, personalities, mediation, psychometrics and anthropology. Students will learn the basics about psychological principles as applied to the sciences. Major theoretical perspectives and concepts are presented to explore the social class and social structures within our society.

Ethical issues in Psychology and Counselling

This course will provide the fundamentals of ethical principles in psychology and counselling. It will also cover the code of conduct that is to be adhered to by all psychologists recognised by the American Psychological Association.

Entry Requirements

Interested applicants must possess ONE of the following entry requirements:

  • 3 GCE 'O' Level credit

    OR

  • Full GCE 'N' Level with a C6 credit in English

    OR

  • ITE NITEC, COS or NTC qualification

Other equivalent qualification may be considered on a case by case basis

Additional Criteria

All applicants must possess a minimum C6 pass in English Language at GCE 'N' / GCE 'O' Level.
Applicants who do not meet the English requirements are required to:
• achieve a minimum of band 6.0 in the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) conducted by the British Council
OR
• score a minimum of 213 points (Computer based) or 79 points (internet-based) in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) conducted by the United States Education & Information Centre
OR
• pass MDIS English Entrance Test
