![]() The University of Wales was established as a federal University in 1893 and consists of ten Constituent Institutions. It is one of the largest universities in the United Kingdom. Aside from these Constituents, the University also offers its qualifications at centres in the UK and internationally, through the work of its Validation Board and Unit. Students who graduate from such collaboration gain University of Wales awards and are given the same recognition as full-time students attending courses at any one of the eight campuses. Faculty of Business & Law The Faculty of Business and Law is one of the largest and most diversified business schools in Australia. Since its inception in 1976 the Faculty has experienced rapid growth in enrolments. Simultaneously the program has been diversified. It began with two streams in a single award- the Bachelor of Business. This has expanded to include a wide range of majors and new awards such as the Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Arts (Justice Studies), Bachelor of Tourism Management, Bachelor of Hospitality Management. This portfolio of courses has been carefully planned to meet the demand of students, the community, and employers. The program is continually under review to reflect changes in demand for particular courses. Course development has recognised the changing patterns of commerce, industry and government, and has been alert to new and growing opportunities for graduates in business and the service professions. The planning and development of courses is undertaken by the faculty with the expert advice of senior management and members of the professions in commerce and the public sector. The Faculty has five teaching Schools. An holistic approach is taken towards the offering of courses in that, whilst individual schools may teach specialist streams or even the majority of an award, courses as a whole are administered by the Faculty. This facilitates the planning, development and evaluation of courses and improve liaison between the Faculty's five Schools: Accounting, Finance and Economics; Law and Justice; Management; Management Information Systems; and Marketing, Tourism and Leisure. In addition to the five teaching Schools, the Faculty manages, through the International and Commercial Office, a range of oncampus and off-campus commercial programs within Australia and overseas. The Faculty undertakes research of theoretical and applied nature, which is focused on Finance Markets and Accounting Research Centre (FIMARC), the Sellenger Centre, the small to medium Enterprises Research Centre (SMERC) and the Working for e-Business (We-B) Centre. The research centers provide an interface between the academic environment and the business world. This is in keeping with the philosophy of the Faculty, which offers courses of an applied nature and ensures that staffs are kept in touch with the most recent and practical aspects of their profession. School of Accounting, Finance and Economics The School has a strong practical orientation that equips students with the skills to find employment within their profession. The School is ranked highly and each year new graduates are keenly sought by employers across Australia and the world. All courses within the School embrace generic skills such as oral and written communication skills, critical thinking and problem solving abilities. In addition, the School places a strong emphasis on information technology. In the area of postgraduate studies, the School is ranked top 10 Australian accounting schools for the quantity and quality of its published research. The School is supported by a Consultative Committee, which includes members from practices, public sector and industry. This Committee takes a close interest in the accounting curriculum and the School's teaching resources to ensure the accounting units are relevant to industry and accounting practice.
