Objectives

  • To equip participants with more in-depth understanding of specialised Mass Communications subjects

Assessment Methods

Modules will be assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations depending on the individual module objectives. The proportion of marks attributed to coursework and final examinations is subject to the discretion of individual lecturers and varies according to different modules.

 

Graduation 

Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded with the Diploma in Mass Communications awarded by MDIS.

Human & Mass Communications : Structure & Process

To provide an understanding of the processes, variables and concepts in verbal and non-verbal communications. They will acquire the fundamentals skills and strategies involved in effective human organisational communications. The course will also develop their awareness of the crucial challenges of communications in today's "global village".

Social Behavioural Studies

To equip students with an understanding of the dynamics of human interaction, with special emphasis on the individual social world. They will develop the impetus to think, perceive and act as social psychologists which will enhance their skills in interpersonal/ group interaction. In the process, they will acquire the basic skills in data gathering and analysis and when conducting social research. Students will also be given the opportunity to apply their psychological knowledge in analysing contemporary issue.

The Dynamics of Mass Communications

To give an overview of mass communication systems. The students will gain an understanding of the development, nature and function of the press, radio, television, film, recording, advertising and public relations. Students will also be made aware of the latest media trends and the effects of mass communications on society.

Techniques of Professional Speaking & Writing

To enable students to acquire the basic and necessary receptive and productive skills for professional written and oral communication.

TV & Radio Production

To provide an understanding of the basic techniques in radio and TV production, as well as in the process of dramatic and non-dramatic/film production.

Journalism & News Broadcasting

To acquire the basic skills of professional news writing and examine the fundamentals involved in the news gathering process. They will gain competence in accurate fact gathering and investigative reporting. Student will also be able integrate and develop an awareness of the moral and ethical responsibilities involved in professional news reporting.

Advertising: Strategy & Effective Practice

To provide an understanding of the strategies of the advertising and apply them in the area of marketing communication. They will examine how the different media operate as well as the research and media buying functions. Students will also be able to relate international and regional advertising strategies and programmes to the local scene.

Public Relations: Strategy & Effective Practice

To help students gain competence in basic public relations skills and utilise them in analysing public relations programmes. They will also examine public relations opportunities in Asia and suggest applicable strategies in programme implementation.

Graduation Project

The graduation project provides participants with the opportunity to crystallise, integrate and apply the knowledge they have gained in their formal training to the solution of real-life communication problems. In addition, the project is also viewed as a form of subject specialisation for the participants, so as to further their knowledge and insights to the areas that complement their career direction.

Applicants who do not meet the English requirement are required to:

2) Score 213 points (computer-based), 79-80 points (internet-based) or 550 points (paper-based) in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
