Objectives

The Diploma in Fashion Marketing and Communication is a diagnostic foundation programme to gain the necessary skill-set and knowledge to confidently apply to a suitable undergraduate course in the discipline of Fashion.

The objectives of the programmes are:

  • To offer a holistic introduction to Fashion Marketing and Communication, combining industry awareness, technical expertise, and verbal, written and visual communication skills.
  • To provide a sound knowledge base of concepts in Fashion Marketing, Communication and Retailing, while exploring branding and design influences.
  • To provide an essential awareness of the global fashion system to understand how fashion and lifestyle brands interact with their consumers through a variety of media and channels.
  • To provide the guidance to create a portfolio - suitable to apply for Bachelor of Arts programmes in Fashion-related disciplines - that shows creative research, wide cultural references, concept development through mixed media work including digital work.
  • To provide first-hand experience of the Fashion Industry, through live projects with industry partners, participation in local and international competitions, industry visits and events.

Methods of assessment

All assessment is based on 100% coursework. Students are expected to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills in the form of verbal and visual presentations, written essays and reports, 2D Visual research and development of work, 3D prototypes, portfolio work and exhibitions.

 

Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS)

The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), founded in 1956, is Singapore's oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning. MDIS has two subsidiaries: Management Development Institute of Singapore Pte Ltd (MDIS Pte Ltd) to oversee its Singapore academic operations, and MDIS International Pte Ltd to further its globalisation strategy.

 

Communication Principles

The objective of this module is to provide a basic understanding of the key players and dynamics of the media industry. Students will familiarise with a range of research techniques, and learn how to articulate reasoned arguments through the appropriate use of conventions of academic and editorial writing. They will develop fundamental communication skills: written, visual, oral or computer mediated communication.

Fashion History and Culture

This module intends to situate fashion in a broader historical and cultural context. Students will investigate how different social, national, ethnic and gender factors affect the way individuals and groups construct and project their identities through their dress. They will be introduced to a range of research approaches to improve their communication skills.

Fashion Image: Photography and Styling

The aim of this module is to develop student confidence with photography, illustration and layout design through the effective use of software and digital media skills.

Students will be introduced to a range of editorial and retail styling: principles and technqinues.

Fashion Marketing and Merchandising

This modules aims to provide the necessary understanding of the fashion industry. Students will practice essential market research skills to analyse consumer behaviour and forecast future trends. They will study key merchandising, marketing, branding and promotion principles to develop original strategies and tactics.

Fashion Experimentation

The objective of this module is to nurture student creativity through the exploration of mix media. Students will discover various material manipulation and decoration methods. They will gain visual skills to communicate their unique ideas through compelling mood-boards and presentations.

Experience Design

The aim of this module is to provide a basic understanding of the interaction between customer experience and brand. Students will demonstrate evidence of creative thinking through the exploration and communication of design concepts. They will prove appropriate use of visual communication techniques in physical and digital environments. Students will learn how to effectively manage their time while working in teams.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 17 and above, and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • 2 GCE 'A' Levels in any subjects OR
  • International Foundation Diploma in Fashion Design and Marketing from MDIS OR
  • Fashion-related foundation diplomas from local polytechnics or other Private Education Institutes (PEIs) with an entry requirement of 10 years of formal education OR
  • International applicants must have completed 12 years of formal education OR
  • Mature candidates who are 30 years old and above with at least 8 years of relevant working experience

English Language Requirements

  • At least a C6 pass for English (EL1) at GCE ‘O’ level or equivalent
  • Achieve a minimum band of 5.5 in IELTS or equivalent
  • Pass the English Entrance Test conducted by MDIS
  • MDIS Professional Certificate in English

  • Non-tuition fees for full-time programmes include MDIS membership entrance fees, annual membership fees, MDIS experience seminars, CGC Workshop, medical insurance, condition tutorial fee (if applicable) and fee protection scheme.
  • The above does not include Miscellaneous Fees, which refer to any non-compulsory and non-standard fees which the student will pay only when necessary or applicable.  Such fees are normally collected on an ad-hoc basis by the PEI when the need arises.
