Objectives

Product Design Engineering aims to satisfy the demand for creative designers with the necessary knowledge, skill and confidence to design and develop engineering and consumer products from the initial concept (through the stages) of realization, analysis and prototyping to volume production. During this course, students will develop a balance of creative and management skills together with the necessary base knowledge of applied production, engineering and materials technology.

The primary focus of this program is to provide a broad, general education in the theory and practice of product design engineering. The program aims to provide students with a wide range of learning opportunities in an exciting, challenging, stimulating and dynamic quality learning environment.

The programme, as offered the same at the home campus of Northumbria University aims to:

  • Produce graduates with the necessary skills and attributes to take up careers in manufacturing industry as product designers
  • Produce creative and innovative designers with the skills of an industrial product designer and general knowledge of an engineer as applied to design
  • Equip students with a holistic approach to product design
  • Offer a challenging programme that is current and relevant which is influenced by professional experience, consultancy and research
  • Provide wide opportunities for personal and professional development 

Students completeing this programme will have command of a body of core knowledge relating to product design engineering, including an understanding of aspects of the forefront of their discipline.

Assessment Methods

The Modules will be assessed either by coursework, examinations or a combination of both appropriate to module objectives.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be employed as specialists who will link product design in major product manufacturing companies, specialist small manufacturing enterprises and design consultancies. They are expected to rise to positions as senior designers, making use of their knowledge and skills at the highest levels of management.
Recent graduates are working in organisations including Nissan Esterline, AESSEAL plc, Thorn Lighting and Sealed Air Ltd.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 18 and above and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Diploma in Engineering awarded by MDIS 

OR

  • GCE 'A' Level (320 UCAS Tariff points or grades of A, B, B) including subjects in Physics/ Chemistry/ Biology or Computer Science 

OR

  • Other recognized qualifications may be assessed by the University on a case-by-case basis

 

Additional Requirements

Minimum C6 pass in English Language (EL1) and Elementary Mathematics at GCE 'O' Level or equivalent;

Applicants who do not meet the English requirements are required to achieve the following:

  • A minimum of 72 points in the TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language internet based test); including the following minimum scores in the component skills tests: Reading - 18, Writing - 17, Listening, Speaking - 20;

OR

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.5 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 5.5;

OR

  • Pearson Academic score of 51 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 51;

OR

  • Score a minimum of 50% for MDIS Professional Certificate in English (PCIE) at Upper Intermediate Level.

The university also accepts many other English Language qualifications and if there are any questions about English Language requirements the International Admissions Office will be glad to assist.
