Course Overview

Programme Aims & Objectives

This programme will equip students with fundamental knowledge and professional skills in information technology to prepare them for work and further studies in several areas of interest related to IT.

Students will learn about software programming, computing and information systems, database structures and technologies for web and computer networks.

Why University of MDIS

The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), founded in 1956, is Singapore's oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning. Award

Candidates who successfully complete all course work and pass the examinations will be awarded with the International Foundation Diploma in Information Technology from MDIS.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students gain year 1 entry into the following programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) Cybersecurity and Networks (awarded by Teesside University, UK)
  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) Information Technology (awarded by Teesside University, UK)

Infocomm Products Industry Background

Infocomm products are pervasive in our daily lives and are an integral part of how we communicate in this modern world.  From our personal communication devices such as mobile phones, laptops and PCs, to computer hardware, enterprise components and systems that form the fabric of networks, servers and storage to channel and process the massive flows of data throughout the world.  This complex infrastructure of infocomm products and the infocomm services that run on these infocomm products are ubiquitous in our personal and business activities. Correspondingly, there is a wide spectrum of infocomm product companies that have established themselves in Singapore to serve the global markets.

Establishing Headquarters in Singapore

Singapore is an attractive location for infocomm product companies to orchestrate their global operations, and also develop and commercialise new infocomm products. Leading infocomm product companies, such as Dell, HP and IBM and network equipment providers, like Alcatel, Cisco and Lucent, have established regional and global headquarters with the full value chain of activities in Singapore: from R&D and supply chain management to manufacturing, logistics and shared services. The establishment of headquarters in Singapore generates numerous direct jobs in the different specialisations.

Infocomm Technology 

The Infocomm Technology (ICT) industry is reshaping the economy, empowering every sector and contributing to Singapore’s economic and social growth.

Singapore is poised to be an information and technology hub which continues to attract multinational infocomm giants like Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon Web Services, Google, IBM, in addition to international start-ups and exciting user organisations.

Growing Demand For ICT Professionals

The number of employed infocomm manpower grew by 15.1% to reach 172,800 in 2015.

Together with 20,100 infocomm job vacancies, total demand of infocomm manpower increased by 17.1% to reach 192,900 in 2015.

Infocomm professionals are expected to grow by about 53,200 from 2016 to 2018. Technical IT specialists accounted for more than 7 in 10 jobs in 2015 IT Development roles accounted for 48% of the total demand for infocomm professionals, with software development job roles being the most in demand.

The next most demanded group of professionals were those working in Network & Systems related job roles. They accounted for 16% of the total demand for infocomm professionals.

Other tech specialists such as IT Security Specialists, Data Scientists and Infocomm R&D accounted for 6% (9,300) for infocomm professionals.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 14 and above and possess one of the following entrance requirements:

At least 1 GCE 'O' level pass

OR

NITEC / Higher NITEC Qualifications

OR

International applicants must have completed 10 years of formal education

OR

Mature candidates (≥30 years old with 8 years relevant work experience)

OR

At least 1 IGCSE Level Pass

 

English Language Requirements

Applicants are required to possess at least ONE of the following:

C6 pass in English at GCE ‘O’ level or equivalent

OR

Achieve a minimum band of 5.5 in IELTS or equivalent

OR

Pass the English Entrance Test conducted by MDIS

OR

 MDIS Professional Certificate in English

OR

1 IGCSE Level Pass (either English 1st or 2nd language)

OR

Online English Placement Test conducted by MDIS

OR

Achieve a minimum score of 85 and above in Duolingo English Test

If an applicant fails the MDIS English Entrance Test, he or she is required to study, complete and pass the Online English Preparation Course. The applicant will then proceed to take the MDIS English Entrance Test the 2nd time.

Application Procedure

International student is required to apply for a student pass if he/she wishes to study full-time in Singapore.

Applicant is required to submit the following documents to MDIS:

MDIS Application Form

  • 4 recent passport-size photographs of the applicant. (against white background)
  • 1 copy of Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) e-Form 16
  • Copy of applicant's passport pages showing his/ her particulars and travel and travel document's date of validity. (At least 1 year)
  • Copy of applicant's Birth Certificate / Affidavit
  • Copy of applicant's Certified / Notarised copy of Education Results/Certificates and Transcripts ( with detailed results)
  • Copy of the student pass (For applicants transferred from other schools in Singapore) or Notification for Cancellation of Student Pass, Visit pass and Embarkation Form.
  • Must show proof of English Medium Study / First Placement Test Attempted / IELTS / TOEFL
  • Copy of financial ability. (e.g. bank statement, fixed deposit / saving account ) • Visa Required Country only (E.g. minimum amount of RMB150,000 for PRC only)
  • Proof of parent's occupation (PRC only)
  • University Matriculation Form (if applicable)
  • Letter by applicant indicating interest to study with MDIS (study plan/ statement of purpose) for Master programmes

MDIS permits students to pay their course fee in instalments. An administrative charge of S$107.00 (inclusive of GST) will be levied on each late instalment payment of the course fee. Fees are payable upon confirmation and acceptance of the place in the programme before the programme commencement.

You may pay your fee by cash, NETS, VISA, MasterCard, AMEX or by cheque or through our financial assistance scheme.If payment is by cheque, please indicate the details of the programme applied for on the back of the cheque, stating clearly you personal particulars and company name. Unless otherwise stated, all fees are inclusive of GST.

Please note that under the Private Education Act, all students will enter into a Fee Protection Scheme contract with MDIS.
