Dr R. Theyvendran, MDIS Secretary-General;

Faculty Members of the University of Sunderland;

Ladies and Gentlemen,

1  Welcome to the 8th MDIS and University of Sunderland graduation ceremony.

2  Today marks an important day in our graduands’ lives.  Getting to this point in your academic journey is an important achievement in itself, to which I commend you and offer my heartiest congratulations to all of you!

3  With your passion, commitment, tenacity and open mind to learn and succeed - personal competencies you have nurtured throughout your academic journey, you have built a strong foundation for success for your future.  Continue to nurture these abilities as they will prove to be invaluable in your career.

4  As you look forward to embarking on your career, remember that the academic success you achieved today was also a result of the strong support and encouragement you received from your family, loved ones and lecturers.  Graduands, please join me in giving them a big round of applause.

Nurturing work-ready graduates of tomorrow
5  The mission of an education institution or University is to develop the knowledge and skills of its students, in order to nurture work-ready graduates for the global economy. To serve this purpose is to ensure a holistic education that combines quality, industry-relevant curriculum with real-world learning experiences that include learning journeys and exposure to industry.

6  The academic programmes offered by the University of Sunderland are highly regarded in terms of teaching standards, relevance to the real world, and student experience. Coupled with the learning experiences you have acquired at MDIS, in and outside the classroom, you would be in possession of a critical set of industry skills needed for the future.

7  Indeed, MDIS is honoured and privileged to have a long-standing partnership with the University of Sunderland. Since 2004, we have been committed to delivering quality, industry-relevant undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to nurture graduates for the global economy. We also ensure that you receive a similar learning experience at MDIS, just like your counterparts studying at the University of Sunderland’s home campus. Our partnership has also extended to the MDIS Tashkent campus in Uzbekistan.

Achievements and growth
8  Just as we have strong partnerships with global universities, MDIS as an institute also continues to project strong growth. This year, we are honoured to be awarded “Best Business Programme Provider” in HRM Asia’s Readers’ Choice Awards. This award comes on the back of other awards such as the “Largest MBA Programmes and Providers” by the Singapore Business Review in 2017, and our 4th place win in last year’s Enterprise 50 Award. These awards recognise our institute as being amongst the top in the industry and is a testament to our quality standards.

9  As part of our continuous effort to expand into growth areas, we have enhanced our programme offerings to recently include the Master of Business (Human Resource Management) and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Media, Culture and Communication, by the University of Sunderland.

Developing skills needed for the future
10  Just as MDIS grows from strength to strength, we too aim to nurture graduates’ professional growth. Graduands, to sustain and advance your career for job stability and upwards social mobility, embrace lifelong learning. Continuously upgrade your knowledge and enhance your skills to stay relevant. This will lead you to success in your career in the long term.

11  Reinvent yourself so that you transform alongside the economy. It is essential that you continue to grow and change in big and small ways, personally and professionally, so that you can tackle challenges that may come your way in the future.

12  Stay connected with our MDIS Alumni and continue to network with your fellow classmates and teaching faculty.  It is important to maintain existing connections and forge new ones too. This invaluable network will allow you to tap on for new ideas, knowledge and opportunities.

13  I congratulate all of you on your achievements once again. Find your purpose and look for opportunities to make your mark in this new world. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Thank you.
