{"id":2697,"date":"2021-02-12T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-12T01:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/?p=2697"},"modified":"2021-10-12T17:15:59","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T09:15:59","slug":"ushering-the-lunar-new-year-with-12-unique-zodiac-creations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/ushering-the-lunar-new-year-with-12-unique-zodiac-creations\/","title":{"rendered":"Ushering the Lunar New Year with 12 unique zodiac creations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MDIS School of Fashion and Design collaborated with\nSofitel Sentosa once again, this time for a Chinese New Year-themed collection,<em>\n<\/em><em>Rediscover\nProsperity<\/em> in February 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme\nRediscover Prosperity aimed to usher in the Chinese New Year, while giving it a\nFrench Haute Couture spin, in keeping with Sofitel\u2019s branding and heritage. Our\nstudents were tasked to design an outfit resembling one of the 12 Chinese\nZodiacs of their choice, using only one type of sustainable material &#8211; paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\ncreations also had to incorporate elements and silhouettes that uniquely\nrepresent the chosen Zodiac. To illustrate the grandeur of the New Year while\nalluding to French Haute Couture, gold elements were also incorporated in the\ndesigns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 38 second-year students\nfrom the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Fashion and Textile Design programme with the\nUniversity of Portsmouth, UK, and the Higher Diploma Fashion Design and\nMarketing programme participated in this collaboration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the first time that the students created their own\noutfits made out of paper. To top it off, they only had 10 days from conception\nto completion of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 38 designs submitted, 12 creations made the shortlist\nto be showcased at the Sofitel Sentosa resort lobby. Inspired by the masculine silhouette of the ox, Ma Ni decided to challenge gender stereotypes by transforming the silhouette into something feminine yet empowering. Inspired by the night sky, Maria created an outfit that was primarily blue, adorned with specks of gold \u2013 to symbolise the stars and the moon. Taking reference from the <em>qipao<\/em>, a traditional Chinese costume. Valerie was drawn by the masculine stature of the rooster and the vibrant colours of its feathers.
