With\nthe spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, the fashion market is\nfacing a vertiginous drop. Most luxury brands have issued profit warnings and\nlowered revenue forecasts. The pandemic has caused a collapse in the fashion\nindustry as most of the luxury brands are based in Europe. In the meantime,\nfashion weeks have also been called off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\nhave closed all our shops in France and some other European countries based on\nthe request of the respective governments.\u201d On 15 March, Hermes, one of the\nworld\u2019s leading luxury brand, has shut down all of its French production sites,\ntotalling to about 40 manufacturers and tannery factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior\nto that, Gucci, an iconic Italian luxury brand, had also closed its factories\nin Tuscany and Marche, and said the business\u2019 closure could be extended because\nseveral regions are in a lockdown and the COVID-19 pandemic continues to\nescalate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chanel,\none of the bellwethers in the fashion industry, stated that it would\ntemporarily close down all production sites in France, Switzerland and Italy\nfor two weeks, on 18 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No\none anticipated that the coronavirus outbreak would hit the heart of the\nfashion market in an instant. The luxury industry, which regards its production\nsites as the respective brands\u2019 quality benchmarks, was plunged into an\nunprecedented situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nbutterfly effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has been felt around the world. Hand\nsanitisers, protective garments and respirators are luxury items now. The\nCentres for Disease Control officially recommended widespread use of masks to\nhelp slow the spread of the coronavirus. This has caught the attention of the\nfashion industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nPrevention Equipment by Luxury Brands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nCOVID-19 crisis has caused fashion brands to refocus their businesses and\nidentify a common goal: to address the urgent need for the production of\nprevention equipment for the coronavirus crisis \u2013 face masks, hand sanitisers\nand medical gowns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Louis\nVuitton and Prada are among the leading brands of fashion that produces\nsurgical masks in response to the COVID-19 shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\narranging to supply defensive equip to healthcare specialities, Louis Vuitton\nhas repurposed a few Masion\u2019s ateliers over France to produce surgical masks\nand gowns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At\nthe same time, Louis Vuitton will give hundreds of thousands of much required\nnon-surgical masks for cutting edge healthcare workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nthe meantime, Louis Vuitton is releasing a luxury face shield which was\ndesigned to be \u201cboth stylish and protective\u201d, the French fashion house said in\na statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nshield of the protective mask is fixed to an elastic band, with gold rivets\nthat sport the Louis Vuitton\u2019s logo on the side. The shield transitions from\nclear to dark under sunlight, much like the progressive lenses of sunglasses\nand spectacles, thus protecting the wearer\u2019s eyes. Simultaneously, it can be\nturned into a trendy hat when flipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italy\nwas one of the worse-hit countries of the COVID-19 pandemic. On 16 March, Prada\ngave six seriously care units to clinics in Milan and on 18 March reported that\nit had begun the production of 80,000 medical gowns and 110,000 masks after a\ncall from Tuscany locale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Factories that usually produce makeup and perfume for brands like Christian Dior will also start to produce hand sanitisers, and will do so for as long as necessary, according to BBC News. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saint\nLaurent and Balenciaga are slated to manufacture their own face masks for\nFrance. Whereas Gucci will produce and give over 1,000,000 masks and 55,000\nmedical gowns to Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nPrevention Equipment by Local Brands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

World-renowned\nbrands are not the only ones producing face masks, hand sanitisers and medical\ngowns. Local fashion designers, clothing brands and tailors are joining forces\nto sew reusable masks for Singapore\u2019s migrant community and healthcare\nfrontline workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fashion\nbrand Klarra\u2019s design team has donated a batch of reusable non-medical masks to\nProject Masks by the People\u2019s Association Women\u2019s Integrated Network Council.\nAt the same time, bridal designer Fatimah Mohsin launched an independent\nproject to produce washable masks for frontline workers in Singapore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local\nbrand CYC, founded in 1935, is producing 300,000 reusable masks for migrant\nworkers and also engaged the help of volunteers to distribute them. All of\ntheir masks come with a water-repellent anti-viral filter, and is washable up\nto 15 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in the time of COVID-19<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The prevention of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is the responsibility of people all over the world. Agata Maureen, former student from MDIS School of Fashion Design, decided to contribute to the curbing of the spread of the pandemic by launching IKIMOMO, a personal online brand that designs washable masks using breathable fabric. People can customise their reusable mask. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While\nthe fashion industry has designed various prevention equipment to combat the\nspread of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has also inspired us to be more\nenthusiastic and creative.
