{"id":2610,"date":"2020-09-14T15:42:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T07:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/?p=2610"},"modified":"2020-10-07T15:51:57","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T07:51:57","slug":"infidelity-head-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/infidelity-head-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Infidelity head on"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MDIS students from the Teesside\nUniversity\u2019s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Broadcast Media Production (Top-up) programme\nproduced a short film titled, <em>Helen, <\/em>which\nwas featured in the Short Film Social Watch Party event held on 28 May 2020, with\nthe MDIS School of Media and Communications Senior Lecturer, Fuadi Rahmat as\none of the moderators for the event.&nbsp; Organised\nby\nSCAPE Co Ltd, a non-profit organisation that supports youth, talent and\nleadership development, &nbsp;the &nbsp;film &nbsp;was\nshown alongside student works from other media schools in Singapore. While most\nof the works spoke about the need to extend care to marginalised communities in\nSingapore, <em>Helen<\/em> focused on a highly\nemotional issue of Infidelity through a man\u2019s confession to his former and\npresent partners, which is rarely seen in real life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story starts with a man narrating\nhow he felt alive when he met another woman other than his legally wedded wife.\nHe experienced personal love all over again while having to face life\u2019s harsh\nrealities, such as the need to earn and look after his family and to maintain\nhis family\u2019s expenses to the minimum. To him, Home is a private and intimate\nspace where expressions of love can be shared freely. Unfortunately,\ncapitalistic realities make expression of love difficult as his partners (both\npresent wife and future partner) are concerned about daily living. He concedes\nthat he is just too irresponsible to spare a thought for his family in\nrealistic circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this film, the students\nexplored with an unwritten script. A bare structure constructed without lines.\nActors were free to improvise to get a true sense of reality. Actors Sivakumar\nPalakrishnan (Husband), Karen Tan (Present Wife) and Yuvethra Se (Future\nPartner) displayed an array of emotions aimed at engaging audiences. Director\nof Photography Devamanikandan Kannaya Somu also gave his touch of \u2018smoked\nscene\u2019, a technique where cameras rolled in a gently smoked set. Student\nDirector Sivakumar, assisted by Chua Bi Juan as the assistant director, set the\nnarrative in the personal, edited by Lim Xueqi. Selfdirected and monitored with\nan external eye of an assistant director, Sivakumar could achieve internal and\nexternal harmony. Student Art Director Vivien Ong, assisted by Eugene Ho, also\nprovided a unique aesthetic touch to a contemporary Singaporean home. Every\nproperty had its place. Bringing the film to the screen was made possible by\nStudent Producer Lee Wan Lin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\ncan\u2019t invest your heart in another when you don\u2019t have the heart to know your\npartner,\u201d said Director Sivakumar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInfidelity\nis a choice, not a mistake. One has to make a conscious decision. Every\ndecision has a consequence and a price to pay,\u201d shared Assistant Director Chua\nBi Juan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infidelity is a complex issue, as the\nact in itself hurts women deeply. However, marriage therapist Esther Perel\nshared that most men who have committed adultery are also deeply monogamous in\nbelief. The act of finding love in order to make them \u2018alive\u2019 again seems to\nemerge from human\u2019s nature of curiosity and desire. A perennial bugbear in\nharmonious marriage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As artists, MDIS students have\nchosen to take on a difficult topic in life, and to make sense of the dynamics\nof human nature in their creative project. Making choices is what humans do,\nbut the consequences that come with every choice is tested by human\u2019s\nacceptance.
