{"id":2272,"date":"2020-04-06T10:43:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-06T02:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/?p=2272"},"modified":"2020-04-09T16:49:57","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T08:49:57","slug":"a-life-changing-experience-for-many-an-intercultural-exchange-with-japanese-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/a-life-changing-experience-for-many-an-intercultural-exchange-with-japanese-students\/","title":{"rendered":"A life-changing experience for many \u2013 An Intercultural exchange with Japanese students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Intercultural learning opportunities help people develop the\nknowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful\nworld.&nbsp; It\nprovides challenging intercultural\nlearning experiences to young people, enhancing their social and personal\ndevelopment through exchange programmes. It promotes intercultural\nunderstanding, equality of opportunity, justice and peace among people in the\nworld. Intercultural programmes foster inclusion and have the potential to\nchange mind-sets and remind people that unity in diversity is the answer to our\nproblems, not division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 14 January 2019, an intercultural exchange with Japanese students involving a speaking competition, was held at MDIS Auditorium organised by<strong> <\/strong>Culture Connection Pte Ltd, one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/school-of-languages-and-education\" class=\"rank-math-link\">School of Languages and Education (SLE)<\/a>\u2019s collaboration partners. The competition is the brainchild of the Principal of Yamagata Higashi High School who believes in providing exposure to their students in the international arena. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp; total, there were nine teams represented at\nthis event &#8211; three from MDIS-SLE, five &nbsp;from Yamagata Higashi High School and one from\nSIM International. The topics chosen by the group were\nbased on their own interests. 36 students came from Japan.&nbsp; All the 3 levels of MDIS SLE totalling 120\nstudents as well as 30 immersion students participated in this presentation\nprogramme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MDIS SLE was represented by one Level two (Intermediate)\nteam of &nbsp;students and two Level three (Advanced)\nteams. The students were trained by their respective lecturers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the teams came up with\ntheir chosen topic. Our MDIS-SLE teams presented the following topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>&nbsp;QUANTUM COMPUTING<\/li><li>&nbsp;CULTURE SHOCK<\/li><li>THE PROS &amp; CONS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Each team were given about five\nto ten minutes to speak and limited to about six-PowerPoint slides. The\ncriteria included enthusiasm, eye contact and degree of engagement with the\naudience. There was also a question and answer segment included by the panel of\njudges for team members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme provided our students a new personal experience\nin developing their new language communication skills, patience, managing\nstress and conflict, self-esteem and self-confidence. Socially, it was an\nopportunity for them to meet new friends and develop personal relationships and\nexposure in volunteering to represent MDIS. In addition, it enabled them to\nlearn about new cultures and to be open to new challenges.\n\nThe winning trophy\nwas awarded to CIS\/EIS Level two Team. It was a very rewarding experience for our\nmulti-national team comprising Zhang Yinnan (Nancy) Wu Yiwei (Olivia) from\nChina, Lin Ying-I (Selina) from Taiwan and Phan Thi Kim Phung (Kago) from\nVietnam and for their teacher Ms Lata Narayanan who single-handedly trained\nthem. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intercultural learning opportunities help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.&nbsp; It provides challenging intercultural learning experiences to young people, enhancing their social and personal development through exchange programmes.
