This field of study includes\u00a0freshwater,\u00a0marine water\u00a0and\u00a0sediment\u00a0environments. Aquatic toxicology tests (assays) are used to provide qualitative and quantitative data on adverse (deleterious) effects on aquatic organisms from\u00a0toxicant(s). Eventually, such toxins that are accumulated in marine life will be transferred to another trophic level in higher concentration and this process is known as <strong>biomagnification<\/strong>. Human health can be affected by the process of bioaccumulation and biomagnification as we are tertiary consumers and rely on the ocean as a food source.<\/p>\n<p>There are different types of toxicity tests that can be performed on various test species. Different species differ in their susceptibility to chemicals, most likely due to differences in accessibility,\u00a0metabolic rate,\u00a0excretion rate,\u00a0genetic factors, dietary factors, age, sex, health and stress level of the organism.<\/p>\n<p>There are many kinds of toxicity tests widely accepted in the scientific literature and regulatory agencies. One of them is the <strong>LDH assay<\/strong>. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an oxidoreductase enzyme present in a wide variety of organisms. When toxic material damages tissues, the cells\u2019 LDH is released. Since LDH is a fairly stable enzyme, LDH has been widely used to evaluate the presence of damage and toxicity of tissue and cells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glutathione<\/strong> is the principal non-protein thiol involved in the antioxidant cellular defence. In normal conditions, the glutathione redox couple is present in cells in concentrations between 1 and 10 mM, with the reduced GSH predominating over the oxidized form. In the resting cell, the ratio exceeds 100, whereas in various models of oxidative stress, this ratio was reported to decrease to values between 10 and 1.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1922\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/6-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Glutathione peroxidase<\/strong> catalyses the reduction of hydroperoxides, including hydrogen peroxide, by reduced glutathione and functions to protect the cell from oxidative damage.<\/p>\n<p>Toxicity of littoral flora and fauna is also related to water quality. <strong>Biochemical\/Biological Oxygen Demand<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(BOD)<\/strong> is an important water quality parameter because it provides an index to assess the effect of discharged wastewater will have on the receiving environment. BOD is the amount of\u00a0dissolved oxygen\u00a0needed (i.e. demanded) by aerobic biological organisms to break down organic material present in a given water sample at certain temperature over a specific time period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Littoral water quality analysis<\/strong> is an important part of measuring littoral aquatic toxicity. Measuring <strong>ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, copper, phosphate and iron<\/strong> levels of the water gives preliminary idea of possible aquatic pollution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electrical conductivity<\/strong> is also a form of water quality test. Electrical conductivity is the ability of water to carry electric current and this is determined by ions present in it. It is an indirect indicator of pollution as it represents dissolved salt content in water. Hence, unusually high conductivity values are commonly associated with presence of industrial or domestic effluent.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>littoral zone<\/strong> is the part of a sea, lake or river that is close to the shore. In coastal environments the littoral zone extends from the\u00a0high water mark, which is rarely inundated, to shoreline areas that are permanently submerged. It always includes this\u00a0intertidal zone\u00a0and is often used to mean the same as the intertidal zone. Organisms in this area include anemones, barnacles, chitons, crabs, algae, isopods, limpets, mussels, sea lettuce, sea palms, sea stars, snails, sponges, and whelks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1921\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4.jpg 796w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mdis.edu.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the <strong>National Parks Board\u2019s<\/strong> approval, this <strong>ongoing project<\/strong> with our <strong>Final Year students<\/strong> of <strong>Northumbria University <\/strong>studying<strong> Bachelor of Biotechnology Honours programme<\/strong> in the <strong>School of Life Sciences<\/strong> in <strong>MDIS<\/strong> aims to evaluate toxicity of littoral species from different coastal regions in Singapore using the LDH and Glutathione assays and understanding the quality of aquatic environment by measuring oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, copper, phosphate and iron levels as well as conductivity of the littoral sea water.
