Objectives

The BSc (Hons) Computer and Network Technology programme is designed to provide a challenging programme for students to demonstrate their full potential with respect to computer networking, software development and computer hardware in relation to modern digital communications systems.

The programme is the same as that offered at the home campus in NU in the UK and aims to:

  • produce graduates of Computer and Network Technology with the necessary skills and attributes to take up careers in industry and commerce as computer and network engineers in the IT industry.
  • produce graduates who can analyse hardware, software and network based system requirements to specify, implement and outline computer based network systems.
  • equip students with an awareness of technology in the wider economical, professional, legal, ethical and social context.
  • be current, relevant and informed by staff, professional experience, consultancy and research.

Accreditation

The delivery of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Computer Security and Bachelor of Science (Hons) Computer and Network Technology in the UK is accredited by the British Computer Society, the Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as Chartered IT Professional which is internationally recognised.

 

Assessment Methods

Assessments are carefully designed to ensure all students have gained a thorough understanding of their areas of study. The course is aligned with the Cisco Certified Network Associate industrial qualification, therefore students have the option to enrol in the CISCO academy course. Please note, this is an external organisation to MDIS and Northumbria University.

Other subjects are assessed in a variety of ways and, where possible, are based around a practical activity and include coursework and project reports. Where practical-based assessment is not possible we make use of both multiple choice question tests and standard examinations.

Infocomm Technology (ICT)

The Infocomm Technology (ICT) industry is reshaping the economy, empowering every sector and contributing to Singapore’s economic and social growth.

ICT has also greatly enhanced Singapore’s competitiveness by raising productivity and transforming business processes in the education, healthcare, manufacturing, tourism and hospitality and finance sectors.

Singapore is poised to be an information and technology hub which continues to attract multinational infocomm giants like Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon Web Services, Google, IBM, in addition to international start-ups and exciting user organisations.

 

Growing Demand For Infocomm Professionals

The number of employed infocomm manpower grew by 15.1% to reach 172,800 in 2015. Together with 20,100 infocomm job vacancies, total demand of infocomm manpower increased by 17.1% to reach 192,900 in 2015.

Infocomm professionals are expected to grow by about 53,200 from 2016 to 2018.

Technical IT specialists accounted for more than 7 in 10 jobs in 2015 IT Development roles accounted for 48% of the total demand for infocomm professionals, with software development job roles being the most in demand.

The next most demanded group of professionals were those working in Network & Systems related job roles. They accounted for 16% of the total demand for infocomm professionals.

Other tech specialists such as IT Security Specialists, Data Scientists and Infocomm R&D accounted for 6% (9,300) for infocomm professionals.Total demand of infocomm manpower increased by 4,200 or 2.7% to reach 161,200 in 2013.

This programme provides focused education in the practice and theory of computers and computer data networks. Our networking laboratories are well equipped with the industry standard technologies to emulate the Internet with Cisco equipment and network sensor development environments to study “the Internet of Things” and a dedicated, networked smart home environment.

Your enthusiasm for getting ‘hands-on’ with technology will be satisfied by a very practical approach to learning.
The course content for the network modules is closely aligned with Cisco Networking Academy’s Certified Network Associate (CCNA) training course.
You have the option* to take the CCNA examinations as part of the Cisco Networking Academy’s excellent Certified. 
Network Associate programmes which will give you a great chance to boost your CV.

Programme Structure

 

Course Duration

MDIS Advanced Diploma in Information Technology students will start at Year 2 of a 3-year degree programme in the UK. Graduates from the Polytechnics holding relevant Diplomas will also qualify to start at Year 2.

To be awarded the BSc (Hons) Computer and Network Technology, students are required to complete 10 modules and an individual project for a total of 240 credits. Exemption modules may be allowed during the matriculation process and is at the discretion of Northumbria University.

Therefore the minimum period of candidature will be:
a) 16 months for Full-time programme
b) 20 months for Part-time programme

Upon completion, students will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Computer and Network Technology by Northumbria University, UK.

Module Descriptions

Year 2

Dynamic Internet Technologies
In this module the student will gain knowledge of the principles of developing dynamic, interactive web sites and applications using both server-side and client-side technologies and of issues pertaining to their use. This will include the retrieval and processing of structured data and its integration to create standards compliant, device agnostic, and accessible web interfaces. The storage and manipulation of structured data, especially in relational database, within a web based system will also be covered. A consideration of relevant security issues and methods of working with the Document Object Model (DOM) to manipulate web application interfaces will also be provided.

Network Technology 2
The aim of the module is to provide a detailed, technical introduction to the problem of routing and switching data packets in computer networks and to the design and implementation of Local Area Networks using router and switches. A particular feature of the module is that it closely follows the programme for CCNA 2 and CCNA 3. There is an emphasis on practical work in the delivery of the module and students will have an opportunity to work directly with industry standard networking hardware and software.

Programming in C
This module provides the student with the ability to understand and develop C, and C++ programs with a theoretical underpinning, supported by programming skills to produce efficient and robust applications in an operating system independent environment by using ANSI versions of the languages throughout the module. C and C++ are very widely used programming languages in the modern world specifically for embedded and low level hardware access.

Advanced Operating Systems
The lectures covering the theoretical/standards components of network services and functionality and how they map to a business infrastructure within different operating systems. The module will also cover the current operating systems support for these protocols and services and allow the student to implement these services/facilities and apply them to business needs with a theoretical underpinning.
This module aims to provide an experience in the practical use and application of an operating system in a network environment to provide the essential services required for a commercial organisation. Students will also develop skills in the configuration of an operating systems in a networked environment.
Furthermore, the module provides an opportunity for the student to develop an appreciation of services and the practical skills required for developing and deploying network services into a corporate infrastructure.

Professionalism and Project Management
The aim of this module is to enable students to apply software project management theory and practice and to develop students’ appreciation and reflection of employability, and the professional responsibilities and issues associated with working in a computing environment, in business and industry. At the end of the module student should be prepared to undertake the work based project. This module will be summatively assessed by group proposal and interview and an individual reflection. Students will have the opportunity to undertake formative assessment throughout the module. This will be in the form of feedback sessions class discussion and exercises.

Sensor Networks and Smart Home Technology
Computer Networks are ubiquitous in today’s organisations and usually recognised as having a PC at the client end, however not all computer networks use the client server architecture. This module aims to present you with a number of alternative network systems for implementation, comparison and evaluation. Analysis of sensor networks for use in smart home technology and automated environments will be made to highlight the current trend in networked systems.

Year 3

Network Technology 3
This module aims to provide a detailed examination of wide area networks (WANS) . WANs will be studied in the context of how they relate to local area networks .WAN characteristics and concepts along with a number of implementation mechanisms will be studied. Related topics such as NAT, PAT, DNS and DHCP will be studied and implemented.

Wireless Computer Networks

This module is designed to be suitable for a variety of networking professional roles including those wishing to gain a deeper understanding of 802.11 protocols. Additionally, it is suitable for wireless network administrators and support or design staff requiring a greater understanding of the new technologies and applications of modern converged networks and delegates seeking Certified Wireless Network Associate (or similar) certification.

Advanced Operating Systems II

This module aims to extend the theoretical and practical implementation of Network Services in a hybrid networked environment and to investigate the current and future trends of network services.

The module will provide an opportunity for the student to develop the skills and knowledge to critically appraise and select the features of current OS’s and how they are configured and integrated to provide corporate level services.
The students will be able to analyse the requirements of a business and then map those requirements into a hybrid network environment utilising services appropriately.

Ethical Hacking for Network Security

The module looks into current network hacking techniques and the security implications that need to be addressed to prevent such unauthorised attacks.

Typical hacking techniques that will be examined are Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks. Students will investigate these types of attacks in the laboratory in a “hands on” manner and the use of tools such as Wireshark to examine hacking profiles.

The initial section of the module provides an introduction to TCP/IP Sockets API programming using C and the OSI 7 layer model to demonstrate key hacking concepts.

Individual Project

This module is designed to provide an opportunity for the expression of individual energy and ability in completing a significant item of work related to the aims and objectives of the course. Topics for projects may be suggested by students themselves and perhaps may derive from industrial placement experience or their employment (for part-time students). However, academic staff will also suggest suitable topics for selection by students.

The student will be provided with a supervisor for their project. This person will provide guidance during the project period on the progress of the work, the direction of the study and the quality of work carried out.  Students meet with their supervisor each week.
All projects involve the use of practical skills relevant to the student’s programme, production of a project report and supporting documentation, and a demonstration of the project work.  

Students have the opportunity to choose between two structures for their project, with slightly different marking schemes.

The Software Engineering project is suitable for projects whose emphasis is the construction of a piece of software for actual use or to a similar standard, following sound and thorough software engineering processes; students will be required to justify the product requirements and the tools and techniques used in support of the development.

The General project structure is suitable for projects where an element of investigation is an important feature, and will include a significant literature review. The product may be a prototype aimed at supporting the investigation. It is also suitable for research-based projects or others whose main product is a computing deliverable other than software, e.g. a well-engineered design whose specification involves a significant element of supporting investigation of relevant literature, or a piece of computing  hardware.

During the project, deliverables are regularly submitted to the supervisor for formative feedback.  Deliverables for summative assessment consist of a project report, a computing product and a viva.
