Programme Objectives

The Diploma in Management Studies has been specially designed to:

  • Provide a progression pathway for students with business related foundation diplomas
  • Impart the essential knowledge and pre-requisites needed for students to pursue a formal undergraduate education in Business

 

Assessment Methods

Combination of class participation, assignments, presentations and written examinations.

 

Award

Students who have successfully completed all coursework and examinations will be awarded the Diploma in Management Studies.

Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS)

The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), founded in 1956, is Singapore's oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning. MDIS has two subsidiaries: Management Development Institute of Singapore Pte Ltd (MDIS Pte Ltd) to oversee its Singapore academic operations, and MDIS International Pte Ltd to further its globalisation strategy.

 

Principles of Business Management (II)

This module aims to enable students to explore the importance of management to business organizations. It provides a concise coverage of current management concepts and processes, so as to enable students to apply their knowledge to specific organisational situations more effectively.

 

Business Statistics

This module aims to equip participants with the skills to process and analyse data. Upon completing the module, participants should be able to apply the techniques learned in this module to perform basic forecasting in daily business operations.

 

Business Accounting and Finance

This module is designed to provide the fundamental concepts in business accounting and financial management, and emphasize of the importance of the need, sources and uses of funds. Students are expected to apply the analytical techniques in areas such as costing and financial decision making, i.e. financial statement analysis, budgetary planning and control, capital budgeting, product costing and short-term cost-volume-profit relationship.

 

Fundamentals of Information Technology

This module aims to equip students with fundamental concepts of computer, adequate knowledge of business computing concepts, hardware and software components, and information processing skills.

 

Principles of Economics

This module is designed to provide a basic understanding of how economic activities are interrelated, and outlines the underlying principles of the current business environment.

 

Principles of Marketing

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the core concepts and principles of marketing – to provide them knowledge of how marketers build and manage demand and create and sustain customer relationships - and to understand the challenges facing marketers in a globalised economy.

 

Investment

This module aims to help students analyse how an individual will make investment decisions in an environment under uncertainty. The course provides a brief overview of the financial markets and financial instruments, followed by detailed discussions of some of the common concepts in investment: risk and return, diversification, CAPM (Capital Asset Pricing Model), etc. It focuses on analysing two types of financial assets (stocks and bonds) in this course. It also discusses the derivatives (i.e. options and futures) and mutual funds markets.

 

Business Skills

The module aims to improve the negotiation and persuasion skills of students as well as developing written communication skills, IT skills, social media as an effective business tool and project management. The Second half of the module focuses on presentation skills which covers non-verbal communication, speaking, and how to produce an effective set of PowerPoint slides. The role of culture in business and conflict management skills are also imparted on the students who finish this module by learning techniques that will enable better management of meetings.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 16 and above and possess ONE of the following entrance requirements:

  • 2 GCE 'A' Levels OR
  • MDIS International Foundation Diploma in Management Studies OR
  • International applicants must have completed 12 years of formal education OR
  • Relevant Foundation Diplomas from other recognised local/overseas polytechnics or other PEIs (with an entry requirement of 10 years of formal education) OR
  • Mature candidates (≥30 years old with 8 years relevant work experience) OR
  • International Foundation Diploma in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Art

 

Additional Criteria

Language Requirements:

Applicants are required to possess one of the following:

  • C6 pass for English at GCE ‘O’ Levels or equivalent OR
  • A minimum band of 5.5 in IELTS or equivalent OR
  • Pass the English Entrance Test conducted by MDIS OR
  • MDIS Professional Certificate in English
