Frequently Asked Questions

Does MDIS have any other campuses in the region?

In September 2008, MDIS set up its first overseas campus in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, to offer our unique brand of tertiary education to students from the Central Asia region. The Institute there has been officially recognised as a university by the government of Uzbekistan.

MDIS is currently in the process of setting up its second campus in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.  Positioned as a university college, it will offer courses in Business Management, Information Technology, Digital Media, Mass Communications, and Travel, Tourism & Hospitality Management. Located in the heart of the newly-built EduCity in Johor Bahru’s Iskandar district, the 30-acre campus will open its doors to students in 2017; until then, a City Campus has been set-up at Johor Bahru’s City Square to welcome its initial intake of students.

What quality certifications does MDIS have?

MDIS is committed to delivering high quality education by working hand-in-hand with its many recognised university partners.  In addition to being certified to ISO 9001:2015 standards, the Institute is also registered under the Committee for Private Education (CPE), part of SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) Enhanced Registration Framework and is a recipient of the EduTrust certification (4 years).

Additionally, the MDIS School of Engineering, School of Fashion and Design, and School of Health and Life Sciences’ laboratories are certified under the Occupational Health and Safety Management OHSAS 18001:2007 scheme for the safety of all staff and students.

If I study with MDIS, will my degree be recognised?

As students studying with MDIS are assessed by the partner university’s staff and faculty, the degrees that students at MDIS will receive are identical to the ones that on-campus students at the partner universities will receive.

Who issues my degree certificate?

MDIS’ university partners are involved in the teaching, assessment and certification of MDIS students at a degree level or higher.  The certificate you receive at the end of your degree programme will therefore be identical to the ones that on-campus students at the same partner university will receive.

Who governs and manages MDIS?

As Singapore’s oldest not-for-profit educational institute, MDIS is governed and managed by an elected Governing Council that serves on a voluntary basis.  The Governing Council is further supported by a strong management team with numerous years of professional management experience under their belt.

What does being a “not-for-profit organisation” mean?

In contrast with for-profit educational institutes, every dollar that MDIS makes is channelled back into the institute to further its organisational objectives: namely, to become Singapore’s leading provider of lifelong learning.  All profits and surpluses are therefore re-invested into the organisation to pay for staff salaries, infrastructure improvement projects, and into the further improvement and development of its programmes.

Additionally, as a way of giving back to the community that has helped nurtured it over the years, MDIS also sets aside a portion of its annual surplus for scholarships and other community service projects.

If a student has financial difficulties, where can they go?

MDIS is strategically allied with TCC Credit Co-Operative Limited, another not-for-profit organisation that aims to give its members access to loans at reasonable interest rates.  MDIS students are eligible for preferential loan rates with TCC Credit.

How qualified will my lecturers be?

All of MDIS’ lecturers are screened by the university partner before being allowed to teach, and must either possess a Master’s Degree or higher to teach a degree programme, or a Bachelor’s Degree or higher to teach a International Foundation Diploma or Diploma programme.  Most teaching staff at MDIS also tend to have a wide base of relevant industry experience that they can draw on, thus ensuring that their lessons are both up-to-date and relevant.
