Programme Aims and Objectives

The programme is designed to

  • provide a programme of study which is a unique combination of studies in tourism, hospitality and events management
  • provide a sound knowledge base of concepts and skills in tourism and hospitality with special focus on creative and flexible work environment through intrapreneurship
  • empower individuals to be more creative and flexible in their work environment
  • prepare graduates for future management roles and to facilitate their understanding of the core areas of management as well as acquire knowledge to handle the dynamic travel, tourism and hospitality environment
  • produce graduates who are technically competent, professional and well-respected in the tourism, hospitality and events sector
  • provide participants with the route forward to develop their career within the tourism, hospitality and events sector

 

Programme Structure

The part-time programme can be completed over a 12-month period with two modules per term for four terms.

 

Methods of Assessment

Modules will be assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations depending on the individual modules' objectives. The proportion of marks attributed to coursework and final examinations is subject to the discretion of individual lecturers and varies according to different modules.

 

Award

Students who have successfully completed all coursework and passed the examinations will be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management awarded by MDIS.

Graduates are prepared for careers in industry sectors such as hotels and resorts, cruise lines, restaurants, caterings, events, attractions, travel agencies, conventions, destination marketing and other tourism organisations.

Module Descriptions

Introduction to MICE

The purpose of this unit is to provide the students with an overview of the convention, meeting and exhibition industry. It examines the physical requirements, marketing, management and operation of convention and exhibition facilities. Emphasis is also placed on the planning and organisation of conventions and meetings.

 

Destination Marketing and Communications for Tourism, Hospitality and Events

The aim of this module is to equip students with the fundamental concepts in marketing management and communication and the basic understanding in the development of a marketing plan related to the tourism, hospitality and events sector.

 

Human Resources Management for Tourism, Hospitality and Events

The aim of this module is to enable students to critically think about human resources in domestic and international contexts. This will enable students to become more effective managers and leaders in the international global hospitality industry.

 

Service Quality Management for Tourism, Hospitality and Events

This course presents an integrated approach to the study of principles of services marketing, linking marketing, operations and human resource functions, which enable students to learn how different concepts, framework and analytical procedures can best be used to examine and resolve the challenges in managing and marketing services.

 

Project Management and Financial Decision Making for Hospitality and Events

The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the specific requirements of practices relating to project management and finance within the tourism and events sector. It will encourage students to apply theories and practices that are associated with project management and finance, as appropriate to an events and tourism management sector and be able to evaluate a range of techniques that are available for the event manager.

 

Law for Tourism, Hospitality and Events

The purpose of this module is to develop the student’s understanding of the specific requirements of the local law relating to the travel and tourism sector. It will underpin the knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework. Key legal areas include, employment law, health and safety legislation, data protection, consumer protection, passenger transport operations and the law, and accommodation services law.

 

Leading Hospitality and Tourism Operations

The aim of this module is to give students an opportunity to develop, practice and apply leadership skills in design and implementation of hospitality and tourism "encounters" and the delivery of guest satisfaction.

 

Research Methods in Tourism, Hospitality and Events

The aim of this module is to allow students to develop the abilities in research planning and design. This includes understanding survey and data collection processes, data analysis and report presentation techniques that are applicable to tourism, hospitality and events research. Understanding the research process, basic statistics, survey software and data management options for empirical or non-empirical approaches is essential in making commercial tourism decisions.

 

Work Related Learning Project

The aim of this module is to enable students to synthesise the theoretical and analytical content within the practice environment of tourism, hospitality and events. Students are asked to critically investigate the working practice of an organisation in the Tourism, Hospitality or Events sector and to demonstrate initiative for their own learning experience.
