Objective

The overall aims of the programme are to:

  • Provide an industrially/commercially relevant education for students from a variety of subject backgrounds, employment and life experience utilising appropriate modes of study;
  • Enable students to fully explore the complex body of knowledge related to the Computer Science discipline: some of it at the current boundaries of research and development;
  • Enable students to acquire a range of practical, professional and transferable skills to equip them to contribute to their chosen profession or pursue further study. Successful students will merit relevant exemption from British Computer Society (BCS) professional examinations and possible partial Chartered Engineering (C.Eng.) status.

Accreditation

This delivery of Bachelor of Science (Hons) Information Technology in the UK is accredited by the British Computer Society, the Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as Chartered IT Professional which is internationally recognised.

Assessment Methods

Knowledge and understanding, cognitive and intellectual are primarily assessed through written examinations and in-course assessments.
For practical/professional skills, in-course assessments will incorporate significant practical implementation including the creation of an assessed product.

Transferable and PDP skills assessment is embedded into subject related in-course assessments. For example, communication skills are assessed when students present solutions to technical problems.  Modules such as Enterprise Project, provide an opportunity to significant assess transferable skills due to the amount of the development work and the requirement to work in teams, document solutions and orally defend decisions.

The management of own learning and self-development is addressed primarily in the completion of in-course assessments.
Group work is used in some modules incorporating significant transferable skills development and may include peer assessment.

Growing Demand For Infocomm Professionals

The number of employed infocomm manpower grew by 15.1% to reach 172,800 in 2015. Together with 20,100 infocomm job vacancies, total demand of infocomm manpower increased by 17.1% to reach 192,900 in 2015.

Infocomm professionals are expected to grow by about 53,200 from 2016 to 2018.

Technical IT specialists accounted for more than 7 in 10 jobs in 2015 IT Development roles accounted for 48% of the total demand for infocomm professionals, with software development job roles being the most in demand.

The next most demanded group of professionals were those working in Network & Systems related job roles. They accounted for 16% of the total demand for infocomm professionals.

Other tech specialists such as IT Security Specialists, Data Scientists and Infocomm R&D accounted for 6% (9,300) for infocomm professionals. Total demand of infocomm manpower increased by 4,200 or 2.7% to reach 161,200 in 2013.

Module Descriptions

Year 1

Client-side Scripting

This module aims to provide programming skills for design centric developers and provide a foundation for solving problems through programming.  It will enable the development of simple JavaScript applications. Students will be supported through all phases of the development life cycle including analysis, design, development, debuging and testing.  The module will enable the students to develop interactive scripts that utilise mark-up language, and cascading style sheets with the support of development and deployment tools.

Computer and Mobile Technologies

This module starts by introducing students to the theory behind the workings of digital devices whether they be general-purpose or specialist. We then explore the construction of digital systems starting with binary first and culminating with the architecture of a complete computer system, including processor, buses and memory. Lastly, we take a look at specialist systems such as mobile devices and games consoles. Lab work will include the use of hardware simulation software, and an introduction to a hardware platform for developing specialist applications.

Introduction to Networks and Computer Security

This module provides a thorough understanding of the role of Computer Networks in modern society.  Network design principles are introduced; current trends in network usage are explored, including the increased demand for bandwidth, the demand for mobile and wireless solutions and the bandwidth divide.  This includes hands-on experience using key network devices including cabling, switches and routers on a wired and wireless network.

Rapid Development Tools

This module will introduce the concept of rapid development applications. It will give students experience of analysing, designing and building database driven applications using a tools-driven approach. A range of rapid application development tools will be utilised, such as Microsoft LightSwitch, Mendix, Zoho Creator.

Systems Design and Databases

This module introduces students to the concepts and techniques of systems analysis and design.  Industry standard approaches shall be studied (UML).  The design and implementation of relational databases and the supporting data description and manipulation language (SQL) shall also be covered.

Web and Mobile Development

This module will enable students to develop responsive desktop and mobile websites utilising an appropriate mark-up and style sheet language (HTML5 and CSS3). It also introduces students to a web development life cycle. It shows how web-based analysis and design techniques can be used early in the life cycle and how project management and quality assurance/quality control techniques can be applied throughout the web cycle. It introduces students to a website development toolkit and testing, including the concepts of usability and accessibility.

Year 2

Enterprise Project

This module will give students an opportunity to undertake the development of a product relevant to their subject specialism, taking into consideration appropriate legal issues and professional ethics.

Information Systems Security

This module covers a range of issues in computer security and information security.  These include access control, technologies used to implement security measures, models of security and cryptography, management of security issues and the design of systems.  How security systems fail is covered, along with related areas such as the legal and ethical background and physical security.  

Networks and Systems Administration

This module introduces students to the key aspects of network and systems administration. This will include a study of current network filing systems, user account issues including account setting up (bulk & individual), generating IDs and passwords, password policies account administration, suspending accounts, changing quotas and passwords and issues associated with wireless networks, etc.

Open Source Web Design

This module is intended to provide students with both theoretical and practical perspectives of developing content rich websites using an open source development platform such as Wordpress. It also introduces students to designing and developing websites using a cloud-based host, before moving on to self-hosting and manipulation of the back-end structure.

Rapid Development Systems

This course considers the development of secure information systems. It will take a tool-driven approach to advanced application development; creating rich user interfaces and generating code. The utilisation of web services and plug-in application components to further enhance functionality and usability will be considered.

Year 3

Advanced Networks

The modern world is increasingly dependent on networks.  Networks support global communications, business support, automation, social activities and much more. The skills and knowledge to support them are increasingly diverse, requiring not just technical ability but also an awareness of their role within a business. This module continues to develop the students’ understanding of networking in a business environment.

Client-Focused Business Solutions

Consultancy is widely used within industry. Close collaboration between the client and consultants allows the design and implementation of IT projects to be made based on informed decisions. This module will allow students to work in close collaboration with their client(s) by taking on the role of the IT consultant. They will have the opportunity to go through the full consultancy cycle by advising and influencing their client(s) to do things differently when it comes to their IT solutions. Students will also be able to decide what data to collect and determine which tool will be the most appropriate to collect the data set and present findings to their clients.

Computing Project

The Computing Project is a large scale piece of work, undertaken by the student under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. The project involves the production of a substantial artefact related to the computing field and culminates in the writing of a report and a viva consisting of presentation, demonstration and discussion of the artefact.

ICT Service Management

The recognition of the close relationship between business and an ICT infrastructure has led to the rise of a service led approach to ICT management.  This approach aims to improve the service offered to the business by the infrastructure through improved design and management methods.

IT Law

This module will introduce the key legal issues that students anticipating a career in the IT industry (in its broadest definition) should be aware of. Key topics will include introduction to the English Legal system, intellectual property rights, computer crime, computer contracts and liability, privacy and data protection, etc. Students will be encouraged to apply the legal principles studied to realistic scenarios and case studies from the real world.
