Dr R Theyvendran is the MDIS Secretary-General, and Chairman and owner of Stamford Media International. He also owns companies in Australia, Sri Lanka, India and the United Kingdom.
He joined MDIS in 1989 and in his current capacity as MDIS Secretary-General, he oversees the administrative operations of the institute. He is also the Chairman of the 42,000-member strong TCC Credit Co-operative Limited, a non-profit financial institute.
Well-regarded in the community, Dr R Theyvendran is the President of the Tamils Representative Council which comprises 36 Indian cultural and social organisations. He is also the Chairman of the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, one of Singapore’s most respected commercial organisations, with more than 900 members.
In recognition of his numerous contributions to social, educational and community service, he was conferred the prestigious Public Service Medal (PBM) at the 1998 Singapore National Day Awards Ceremony. He was conferred the Honorary Degree of ‘Doctor of the University’ by the University of Bradford (UK) in 2000 and the Honorary Degree of ‘Doctor of Humane Letters’ by the Oklahoma City University (USA) in 2006 for his contributions in the field of education and public service.
In September 2011, he became the first Singaporean to be conferred a prestigious award by the President of Uzbekistan. The Commemorative Medal in celebration of Uzbekistan’s 20 years of Independence, was awarded for his outstanding role in helping to develop the higher education sector and for acting as a bridge between Singapore and Uzbekistan.
