Green MDIS

During this current financial crunch and weakening economy, it seems some schools can already feel the pinch as limited funds must often be spread across a variety of projects, both environmentally and educationally focused. Unfortunately, the more extensive the environmentally-focused the more expensive it may be.

That is not the only problem schools face.
Conservation programmes such as delaying work hours until the afternoon or at night do not translate well in the education world. This means that savings that can be realised through a simple change in schedule often do not find their way into the schools.

Fortunately, there are many things that schools can do that often do not cost a cent. Green MDIS has engaged in everything from recycling to reusing, to replacing programmes to cut energy bills on a daily basis.
The objective of initiating Green MDIS is part of MDIS' efforts to be responsible to the environment. Efforts in the capacity of an individual or institute go a long way.

Green MDIS aims to promote greater environmental awareness and positive actions for the environment through offering tips on how to make a difference to both on and away from the MDIS Campus. We would seek support from staff, students, members and associates who would like to make practical attempts to minimise the damage of our beautiful planet.
Green MDIS also explores and taps on initiatives and incentive schemes that spin off from the National Environment Agency, Ministry of Environment and Building and Construction Authority.

The simple truth is that with difficult economic times ahead, we believe we should strive to make this creation possible and sustainable together. Green MDIS hopes to serve as a model in driving green activities in the private education sector.

Green MDIS Campaigns On-Campus

Green MDIS has initiated a number of awareness campaigns on-campus with staff and students. With the inaugural campaign organised in 2009, visitors can find these initiatives around MDIS Campus and MDIS Dhoby Ghaut. Some of the examples are as follows:

  1. Recycle bins are placed strategically around MDIS Campus to promote recycling.
  2. Posters are placed in many locations around MDIS Campus including the classrooms and restrooms to create awareness. You may have seen some of these around.
  3. Green MDIS lanyards are distributed to staff to constantly remind them to take the lead in our efforts and spearhead the actions for the environment.
  4. Large Green MDIS banners are displayed prominently around MDIS Campus.
  5. Green MDIS stickers are placed prominently on all dinning tables in the canteen and study desks around campus.
  6. The Green MDIS logo and the message "Let's go green... think before you print" are included in all emails to create awareness not only within the Institute, but also to spread the message to MDIS affiliates and associates.
  7. Tips on saving the environment are sent regularly to all students.

Going Further

Plans are in place to make our up and coming integrated hostel into a "green" building to facilitate our commitment to the environment. In line with Green MDIS values, the planning and design of the building will integrate "green" features where possible. Check here for further information when the building is ready!
