President's Message

“We are looking to expand regionally into ASEAN and I am confident that MDIS will continue to be an Institute of academic excellence and a global provider of internationally accredited academic programmes.”

2016 was a momentous year for MDIS as we celebrated our 60th Anniversary. With a strong commitment to our vision and mission, the Institute has made remarkable progress over the years. To commemorate this milestone, we launched a series of significant initiatives.

MDIS 60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Honouring MDIS’ 60 years of education and training excellence, the MDIS Heritage Gallery was launched in January 2016 to showcase MDIS’ rich heritage, its significant milestones, achievements and successes in the last six decades.

In April 2016, MDIS’ Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in splendour at The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore. The gala dinner was graced by distinguished Guest-of-Honour, Madam Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Marsiling – Yew Tee GRC. During the event, Madam Halimah Yacob and Dr Ahmad Magad, Chairman of the MDIS Senate unveiled the MDIS Coat of Arms. The emblem, a reflection of MDIS’ progressive growth and resolve to soar above the challenges of the 21st century, was incorporated into MDIS’ existing logo. We also launched a commemorative book titled "Inspiring Lifelong Learning – The MDIS Story" that captures the Institute’s history of development and expansion in Singapore, Uzbekistan, Malaysia and India.

COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY

Being a not-for-profit educational institute, MDIS has always been conscientious of its role as a socially responsible corporate citizen, reaching out to help the needy. We have endorsed this by supporting students with special needs through the MDIS 60th Anniversary Special Bursary. The bursary award was given to 40 recipients from MOE’s special education schools.

In addition, MDIS continued its tradition of offering scholarships to leap year babies. Newborn baby Eugene Goo was presented with a scholarship worth S$30,000 to pursue his tertiary education at MDIS. As part of the celebrations, Eugene Goo and ten other leap year babies were also presented with S$600 worth of shopping vouchers.

Each year, MDIS collaborates with Jalan Kayu constituency as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts. 2016 was the seventh year of the MDIS-Jalan Kayu Heartstrings Programme. A total of S$30,000 worth of groceries and supermarket vouchers were distributed to 150 needy families during the annual Jalan Kayu Family Day event in July 2016. Each family received S$200 worth of groceries and shopping vouchers.

OVERCOMING 2016’S CHALLENGES

Whilst it has been a celebratory year for the Institute, it has also been a challenging year for the private education industry with the slowing global economy and relentless pace of technological changes affecting businesses and industries. With the emphasis on SkillsFuture, we are focused on providing skills-based qualifications to prepare individuals to be future-ready and industry relevant.

On the financial front, MDIS achieved a financial surplus of about S$9.3 million in 2016, before donations and taxes. This was achieved through the prudent and concerted efforts of the Institute’s management. Coupled with our relentless pursuit of high quality academic and business standards, we have achieved commendable operational and infrastructural growth in Singapore and in our three overseas campuses:

MDIS TASHKENT
MDIS Tashkent, with the strong support of the Uzbekistan government, has achieved tremendous growth. Student enrolment has grown from 250 in 2008 to more than 2,500 in 2016. To cater for this growth, the Institute is expanding its campus facilities as it continues to gain greater academic stature in Uzbekistan and Central Asia.

KOLEJ MDIS MALAYSIA
Operating out of its City Campus at City Square Mall, Kolej MDIS Malaysia in Johor has progressed well with an increasing number of students, now totalling more than 500. The new campus in EduCity is set to open its doors to current and future students once phase one of construction is completed in the third quarter of 2017.

MDIS-VELS INDIA
Diploma and advanced diploma programmes in Business Studies and Tourism and Hospitality Management were offered to equip students in India with work-ready skills and competencies for the global workplace. Following the completion of their diplomas, students of MDIS-VELS India are given the opportunity to pursue their degrees at MDIS Campus in Singapore.
